Kinji Fukasaku's (BATTLE ROYALE) revered gangster series is a landmark of 1970's Japanese cinema. Set just after WWII and based on the memoirs of a real-life crime boss, these films serve to deglamorize the traditional cinematic portrayal of organized crime, instead painting its members as petty, backstabbing thugs who will turn on their closest allies for power or profit. The story follows the violent exploits of Shozo Hirono (Bunta Sugawara), a former soldier, as he joins a yakuza gang in

A second chapter that's every bit as powerful as the first.

When there are issues between yakuza families, that generally means a lot of yelling, swearing, blades being drawn, and eventually gunfire--not necessarily in that order.

In 1950 Hiroshima, gangs, drugs, prostitution, and violence run prevalent in the streets. Several gangs have formed due to the abundance of poverty, homelessness, and lack of a quality educational system. For Yamanaka, crime has never felt right. When crime family boss Muraoka offers Yamanaka a job, he cannot refuse. As gifts of appreciation, Muraoka rewards Yamanaka with a watch, food, a position, and a magnificent wife. Everything seems right in the world for Yamanaka; however, a life of crime never pays and we will quickly learn that everything that comes easy goes easy.

Kinji Fukasaku, director of Vigilante in the Funky Hat 1 & 2, Wolves, Pigs, and People, The Yakuza Papers 1, 2, 3, 4, & 5, Samurai Reincarnation, the Geisha House, and Battle Royale 1 & 2, delivers Yakuza Papers volume 2. The storyline for this picture is solid; though not to the level of Yakuza Papers volume 1. Sonny Chiba was a brilliant addition to the cast. In the first film I had ever seen him in Seizo Fukumoto portrayed a brilliant main character.

The attack during the card game, the beating of the ?descent citizen,? Mr. Wada getting shot, the bomb going off at the race track, the shoot out and fight in the gambling hall, the capturing of the dog and eating it sequence, the Tokimori shooting, the three family members getting shot, the spitting up of the blood sequence, the boat interrogation, the target practice shooting, the drive-by shooting, Yamanaka shooting Katsutuchi, the brothel shooting, Keisuke getting stabbed in the car, the Takanashi shooting, and the suicide ending were amongst the better portions of the film.

The first Yakuza Papers film was outstanding; it reminded me of the original God Father picture. Yakuza Papers volume 1 was carried by an outstanding lead character, Shozo. Shozo is present in Yakuza Papers 2, but he scarcely viewed throughout the film and is irrelevant to the primary storyline. If you enjoyed the first Yakuza Papers, you should view this installment of the series. Volume 1 is required viewing to fully grasp the storyline of volume 2.
