Kinji Fukasaku's (BATTLE ROYALE) revered gangster series is a landmark of 1970's Japanese cinema. Set just after WWII and based on the memoirs of a real-life crime boss, these films serve to deglamorize the traditional cinematic portrayal of organized crime, instead painting its members as petty, backstabbing thugs who will turn on their closest allies for power or profit. The story follows the violent exploits of Shozo Hirono (Bunta Sugawara), a former soldier, as he joins a yakuza gang in

Fukasaku and Kasahara go for extreme nihilism here, telling us that every deal, every action, every death was all for nothing.

Yes, it's a yakuza extravaganza with this epic that involves thirteen different crime families, and at least two dozen characters given major screen time.

In 1963, Japan is preparing for the Olympics and doing their best to clean-up their growing crime rate. Hiroshima is in the mist of a war between feuding Yakuza gangs. Caught in the middle of this war are the police and the media. The Japanese government hopes to arrest or embarrass the Yakuza gangs. It is quite apparent that by 1964, the landscape of the Yakuza gangs will have changed drastically, either by imprisonment or by the death of their leaders during the war.

?Act like you are taking a leak. No?over there!?

Kinji Fukasaku, director of Vigilante in the Funky Hat 1 & 2, Wolves, Pigs, and People, The Yakuza Papers 1, 2, 3, 4, & 5, Samurai Reincarnation, the Geisha House, and Battle Royal 1 & 2, delivers Yakuza Papers volume 4. The storyline for this film brilliantly ties in our tale with actual Japanese history. The acting remains spectacular in this installment of the series. The premise for this picture is solid and well presented.

?I didn?t come to a funeral to get to get dragged into their fucking war.?

The shaved head conversation with the women, the ?outsiders? slap, the misfire death, the ?loss of his pretty head? threat, the ?bills? sequence, the citizens getting shot, the car sex scene, the hand stabbing and nose removal, the propane tank beating, the snake cutting analogy, the retribution taken on Hirono?s men, Okajima getting shot down, the precipice analogy, the boss snitched discovery, the shoot-out in the street, the hospital press conference, and Fyata getting shot by his friend were amongst the better portions of the film.

?She won?t even let me touch her pussy hair.?

The end of the third Yakuza picture left high expectations for the fourth installment. It was apparent a war was about to break out and I was hopeful that Hirono would finally obtain his revenge he was owed from the first film. As the conclusion to this picture approached, it became apparent that Hirono may never obtain the revenge he so deserves. Hirono may ultimately conclude his gangster career in the most anticlimactic of fashions. The ending was not fitting for our hero?though one installment remains in which our hero may reach a suitable ending.

?I never expected a bunch of outsiders to fight my fight for me.?

Grade: B-
