Year of the Horse: Neil Young & Crazy Horse Live Reviews

Jim Jarmusch shot this documentary/live about Neil Young and his band Crazy Horse as they toured in 1996. It was shot on low quality film stock intentionally (Super 8mm, and 16mm film stocks as well as Hi-8 Video Tape), and the look is part of the charm. Quite frankly, if you don't like Neil Young and his music, avoid this altogether. It was made for people who really like Neil Young. I liked it for what it was, but it is a little hard to recommend to someone who is only a casual fan of Young and his work.

Essential for fans of the Horse and Jarmusch. Either way, you either get it or you don't.

Possibly Jim Jarmusch let his fan worship get in the way of making a really good concert documentary of Crazy Horse -- what he ended up with is kind of a mess. He let's the Crazy Horse members act too much like old farts and keeps in footage that he really should have edited out. That said, if you love it when every Neil Young song turns into a long guitar jam, then the music will carry you through this film. Jarmusch does glimpse transcendence from time to time by intercutting travelling shots into the live shots.

2/4 Stars

This was a documentary about Neil Young and Crazy Horse, but this movie was boring in most of these parts. The music was okay and boring at the same time. Like I said, this was boring in second half, and I was ready to turn it off. I think that Neil Young is a fine artist, but I don't think that this documentary is something for people to watch over and over again.

Beautiful tribute to the band, the music, the noise.
