Total Recall: Jim Carrey's Greatest Movies
by Jeff Giles | December 17, 2008
Blog Article | Discuss Article
Summary

He's one of the most bankable stars in Hollywood, one whose career has weathered such box-office storms as The Majestic and The Number 23 to amass over $3 billion in receipts -- and with his latest release, Yes Man, bowing this weekend, we decided there was no time like the present to take a look at the best-reviewed films of Jim Carrey's career. Here is the proof that critics don't understand Jim Carrey. I'ma Carrey fan since the age of 4, and is all-time masterpiece is Ace Ventura. S

ure, Truman Show is awesome (never seen Eternal Sunshine. I will one day. I also plan to see Dumb and Dumber and Cable Guy. But I lack the time to go rent them!) but Ace Ventura is the true Jim Carrey at his best. Sure, it's not subtle, it is ridiculous and pretty obscene at time, but name me one character, just ONE, that is more wild and larger-than-life than Ace Ventura.

Jim Carrey was my generation's Jerry Lewis. But critics never understood that.

I happy to see some love for Count Olaf tough. The movie wasn't as good as it could have been, but Carrey was stellar.

I must also say is turn as The Riddler wasn't that bad. Certainly better than Tommy Lee Jones as Two-Face.

So, you're telling me you haven't seen some of Carrey's most successful movies, and you're already claiming "Ace Ventura" is his "masterpiece"? "Dumb and Dumber" is much better than "Ace Ventura."

Also, films like "Truman Show" and "Eternal Sunshine" helped bring Carrey's sincere acting skills to the forefront. Both are two of the best romantic comedies I've ever seen, and the sci-fi aspect of "Eternal Sunshine" is really great.

I would have to say "Eternal Sunshine" is my favorite Carrey film.

Looking back at it, "The Truman Show" was downright prophetic.

I guess I didn't realize "Liar Liar" was that well reviewed; it makes me feel better about enjoying it as much as I do.

When my mom and I watched Liar Liar for the first time, I saw her laugh so hysterically that it almost scared me!

I've never realized how much I've grown up watching Jim Carrey's movies. As a kid, I had such a great time watching him in The Mask. As a teen I learned to appreciate the meaning behind The Truman Show. Finally as a young adult I sympathized with him in Eternal Sunshine on such a personal level that it really moved me. I hope Carrey will continue taking good serious roles like Truman Show and Eternal Sunshine, but I wouldn't mind a laugh or two from him either (as long as its tasteful).

First off Collex, dont come onto a comment board and make yourself sound like a ignorant person. if you havent seen the majority of a person's movies dont bash on reviewers or people that have. You dont really have room to critisize anyones opinion when from how it looks you have only seen 2 of his movies. Ace Ventura was really funny but these guys are looking at a success/good acting best, and in that category ace ventura is near the bottom in my opinion. Eternal was easily his best movie, he showed the most range and put in a terrific performance. Number 23 was awful but hats off to him for trying something new, cant help that the writing and directing were awful.

Last night, I watched 'Sunrise' for the first time. It's the only Murnau film I've seen so far, but it is definitely his BEST!

Cameron Diaz has never looked half as good in ANY movie as she did the first time she came out of the rain in "The Mask".

Where the hell is 'Rubberface'? That film is a perfect example of... aw, who'm I kidding? That 'film' is just terrible. 'Once Bitten' isn't too bad, though.

However, it does take this ENTIRE 10 movie list to make up for "The Number 23". Oh, I'm getting Hulk-rage just thinking about that pile...

Also, I'm selling cheap maple-covered gold and other video games at spamgarbageposter.com!

Very true, but I must admit that Eternal Sunshine is definately his best work (along with Truman and Man From The Moon) becaude it really shows therange of his acting skills. And it's always nice to see someone coming out of his niche and trying something new and different. However I think his new movie is going to suck, after the trailer I see nothing interesting about it. He's got some serious problems with choosing good parts recently.

Funny that my favorite movie that Jim Carrey was in was THE MAJESTIC. I used to work at several movie theaters and that era of films portrayed in the movie was one of my favorites. It has a place in my heart. 'Sunshine' 'Truman are my other top two. I would have loved to have seen a sequel to Truman with him adjusting to the real world and finding his birth parents.

The best part of Liar Liar was during the outtakes - "It's a goose!" still brings a smile to my face just thinking about it

AV is his defining movie I would say, although his recent hits with Liar Liar and Bruce Almighty are much more standard. Movies like Truman Show, Eternal Sunshine, 23, anyone of a thousand actors could have done. No one else could have done Ace Ventura or the Cable Guy, Dumb and Dumber, The Mask. This list is BS

- Ace Ventura: Pet Detective (Again not very funny but great performance)

His best dramatic movie is Eternal Sunshine.
Runners Up:

- Truman Show
- Man on The Moon

I feel this is a very fine list. It is almost how I would announce it. However, I would not have even thought of including Peggy Sue Got Married. I do not understand why that is even considered a Jim Carrey film. He really is not in it that much. However, removing the film makes room for a rotten movie according to the meter, and that would lessen Jim Carrey's prestige. I would remove it from my personal list anyways, and I feel either "Bruce Almighty" or "The Majestic" would make a great addition. I personally thought "The Number 23" was a decent film, but I see it isn't well liked amongst the rottentomatoes community nor T-Meter critics, so putting it on the list would be a terrible idea. Also, this list is made in response to "Yes Man" coming out. Is it just me, or does the film look a lot like "Liar Liar?"

First of all, the Majestic did indeed suck. Second of all, I also agree that Peggy Sue shouldn't be on this list and neither should Earth Girls are easy or whatever that piece of garbage is that you will only see at 3:30 am on the most random station on your dial. Also, I feel like these lists really shouldn't be based on their Tomatometer Rating. I get that it's the basis for the website, but come on, Dumb and Dumber is #10? No real Jim Carrey fan would put Dumb and Dumber on the bottom of a top 10 Carrey movie list. Finally, I guess I'm in the minority here but CABLE GUY WAS ONE OF THE FUNNIEST MOVIES I'VE EVER SEEN AND ME, MYSELF AND IRENE IS THE MOST UNDERRATED COMEDY EVER!!!!!

Sure, they may be it's Greatest according to people who thinks they know the absolute truth, like you, but it's still my opinion. I don't hate critics, but when it comes to Jim Carrey, is humor style seems to be to "common" for them to appreciate.

I saw Ace Ventura when I was 4 or 5. It's the best Carrey movie I've ever seen and I doubt I will ever see a better one soon. I don't care about "acting" abilities in his case. I want to see the Jim Carrey who made me laugh at 5. Call it childhood bias, but you must respect a man's childhood.

P.S. DOn't want to sound rude, but I don't take your comment of me being ignorant very well. I consider myself a very knowledgeable person, especially when it comes to movie. It's not for nothing my friends call me IMDB. I'm sorry if you didn't mean to insult me, but this is what it felt like.

I really don't want to get in a fight because I know I wasn't involved, but your friends probably don't have much movie knowledge if they're calling someone who hadn't seen Dumb and Dumber until today IMDB. Ignorance involves coming to a conclusion about something without gathering all available information...in this case, weighing in on a Jim Carrey list without seeing what I believe most people would consider one of Carrey's best movies (Dumb and Dumber) is a bit ignorant. Not to mention that you only watched 20 minutes of Dumb and Dumber (the beginning is funny but it's def not as funny as the rest of the movie). Dumb and Dumber is not only Carrey's best comedic performance (besides maybe The Cable Guy but I know most don't agree with me on that) but it's also (in my opinion) the Farrely brothers masterpiece (yes, I think it's way better than Something about Mary which was also good).

Not to go on a tangent here, but does anyone ever wonder why no one ever thought his In Living Color character Fire Marshall Bill would make a good movie. I mean, back when Jim Carrey was doing slapstick, everything he did was hilarious and I don't see why this character couldn't have put together 90 funny minutes worth watching. He was kind of a one trick pony character but I really think the movie could have been developed into something funny about 15 years ago.

I will have to say that this list isn't the way any huge Jim Carrey fan would ever line up. Most people out there know Jim Carrey as the ridiculous comedian who started (and I am so glad someone mentioned this) with that awesome fireman Bill skit on In Living Color, to a man who can, if requested, deliver an amazing dramatic oscar nominated role. And I am not sure if that ever happened but I am positive he is a man who can pull it off. But seriously, when someone mentions Jim Carrey, I am pretty friggin sure that we all think of his famous one liners from Ave Ventura and The Mask before we go on and quote Man on the Moon or The Majestic! Anyways, here is how I would have atleast done it.

1. Ace Ventura
2. The Mask
3. Dumb and Dumber
4. Ace Ventura 2
5. Liar Liar
6. The Cable Guy
7. Fun With Dick and Jane
8. Bruce Almighty
9. Me Myself and Irene
10. The Truman Show

Yeah, I named pretty much all of his movies that make us laugh and not feel heart warmed but when I want to watch a comedy to laugh my @$$ off, I usually go for a Jim Carrey movie or a Will Ferrell movie. If I want to feel all butterflied inside, Ill put on Door to Door or something in that nature. Regardless of my list, I love every movie he has done and thought he has done amazing in them all. Even 23.

Oh! And speaking of Farrelly Brothers movies! I thought Stuck On You was a thousand times funnier than There's Something About Mary. But thats just me.

I have been a big supporter of Jim Carrey since I saw his work on In Living Color (Firemarshall Bob, Vanilla Ice, etc) I knew he was gonna be big someday and kept telling everyone "you gotta see the white guy on In Living Color!" Then, I happened to see Ace Ventura Pet Detective, and I was hooked. Jim is beyond talented, and however mis-written or misused his talents have been, he shines through in anything he does. There is a certain dark genious to what he does in his comedy, and he can be silly, but we all need a dose of that in our lives. I truly appreciate every work he has done and regret that he has been stereotyped into the rubber-face goofball comic. He has more talent than that. But I think he truly enjoys the offbeat humor he performs in films like Ace, Liar Liar and Yes Man, that is why he returns to them. He is full of life and happiness and I think too many films are trying to be serious to gain credibility and Oscar nods. Yes Man even trumped Will Smith's serious flick at the box office. Thank God. I'm tired of all these actors getting serious because they reach a certain age. I'd rather laugh my *** off and enjoy myself than see another Academy ***-kissing drama performance from these aging actors. Humor and horror are the hardest genres of film to master, and few have done it. Kudos to Carrey for mastering the technique of holding down a 2-3 hour film and not being dull. It's hard work, and he's up to the task.

You have to see The Cable Guy. It is definitely my favorite Jim Carry movie.
