They speak entirely in plot points and punchlines and seem to be motivated only by lust, greed and ego. Well, we all are, but few bring to this motivation so little intelligence and wit.
"The movie unfortunately gives them no dialogue expanding them into recognizable human beings. They speak entirely in plot points and punchlines.... ....but few bring to this motivation so little intelligence and wit. "Really. And then There's Something About Mary for which that could be said a hundred times more strongly and you rate that one twice as high and actually praise for not even having a plot at all?And what in the world did your three star American Pie have that this did not? And yet it's pretty easy to answer the question in reverse. I mean here they at least added some depth and old-time 80's sweetness underneath it all. When has adding a spoonful of John Hughes made this sort of comedy worse?I honestly don't recall the Cambridge vs. Cambridge University side of it much but I do know that at least a couple times she DID call it just plain old Cambridge, so come on. Wow what an absurdly pedantic little thing to base a quarter of a review on! Maybe everyone was still in a bad mood over the Oscars when they wrote the reviews for this??Wow, lighten up a bit about the ball, instead of talking about Darwin awards and aiding and abetting maybe just enjoy that for it's total 80's goofiness? I'm surprised Roeper actually gets it all and you don't since normally I'd have thought you'd have been much more likely to go for this sort of film.I don't even know what the "Wendy got all the brains in the family" comment is about when her brother went to MIT....Interestingly, I just noticed viewers here have rated it 3.5 stars! And when I saw it, the theater was laughing non-stop and I got the impression everyone felt for the two main characters a lot more than in most of the comedies of this sort of the last 15 years. I mean you notice sweetness and tenderness and character and plot in American Pie and nothing in this???You did get the bit about Goldman and LA right at least. Although considering Goldman was actually THE first of all those firms to have opened an LA branch, maybe it was an in joke?

Actually, it's true! I just saw it last night and not one of the characters ever calls it "Cambridge University" instead of just "Cambridge" except for the time Kyle was directly reading from the official admissions letter (where of course they will use the full name). So, what was your point again?Isn't it laughable to call the film inane and then immediately proceed to ramble on for a few paragraphs about "Cambridge University" vs. "Cambridge"? What?? Was this supposed to be some demonstration of wit in attempt to show up the film for what it was supposedly lacking? Yikes. We all loved it and had a great time. Why all the hate? Where from? Lots of laughs and a great trip back. Leads were awesome. And if it's actually true that you rated American Pie three stars and this film one and a half then, taken with sudden rambles on about Cambridge for pages in the middle of a review, I'm not even sure what to think anymore. You don't have to like something (and I'm sure some will dislike it) but the quality of this review is of even lower quality than you think the film is.I'm at a loss (and I actually do agree with your reviews much more often than not and usually find them to be at least worthy even if I do disagree strongly).

"I follow the Darwin Awards carefully. Those are the mentions given out on the Internet every year of people whose deaths may have improved the species by removing them from the gene pool. Many of the characters in /Take Me Home Tonight/ might make a contribution in that way."Let me run this past you. Your name is Matt (Topher Grace)."Topher Grace. Already I'm up to speed!"You decide one way to regain your self-respect and win esteem in Tori's eyes is to risk the challenge of the Ball. The idea is, you climb inside the Ball, the truck bed is tilted, and the Ball rolls out of control downhill on a canyon road above Los Angeles. To get into the Ball is to qualify yourself as a finalist for the Darwin Award."See? It just proves what we already know. The reason that bad things happen to Topher Grace is because he's a dumbass. Just ask Kurtwood Smith.
