The author of works on subjects as wide-ranging as Alfred Hitchcock, 9/11, opera, Christianity, Lenin and David Lynch, Slovenian philosopher Slavoj Zizek is one of the most important—and outrageous—cultural theorists working today. This captivating, erudite documentary explores the eccentric personality and esoteric work of this incomparable academic and writer who has been called everything from "the Elvis of cultural theory" to "a one person culture mulcher". ZIZEK! trails the eminent and intrepid thinker as he crisscrosses the globe—racing from New York City lecture halls, traversing the streets of Buenos Aires, pit-stopping at his home in Ljubljana, Slovenia. In transit, Zizek obsessively reveals the invisible workings of ideology through a unique blend of Lacanian psychoanalysis, Marxism and pop culture critique. He is also unafraid to turn his critical gaze on himself, offering cutting commentary on his personality, private life and growing inter-national celebrity. ZIZEK! is both an unforgettable lesson in philosophy and a compelling portrait of an intellectual maverick. Possessing the capacity to appeal to the uninitiated in a way no other philosopher before him could, Slavoj Zizek's combination of high and low culture will fascinate even those who once believed philosophy to be a bore. --© Zeitgeist Films [More]

With an exclamation point suggesting the collegial equivalent of Beatlemania, Zizek! is a movie made by a groupie too enamored of her subject to make a satisfying film about him.

[Sings] to the smug choir of post-structuralist academia, who have so few movies made for their matinee satisfaction.

If you see only one documentary about a Slovene philosopher this year, it will most likely be Astra Taylor's brisk little film Zizek!

Taylor, making her first feature-length documentary, has the wits to capture the taut mind and disheveled lifestyle of a very funny man.

Zizek is a revolutionary playing a comedian playing a revolutionary. Which makes him worth watching, even in this movie.

Taylor presents Zizek as a larger-than-life figure who manages to engage you even when you're not entirely sure what he's going on about.

To some, he may suggest the 'Elvis of cultural theory'; to others, though, he might be closer to Peter Finch of Network. In short: a cerebral blowhard.

Americans might want to approach him first on the printed page rather than the hyperactive Zizek!

Zizek is such an entertaining speaker -- his eyes intense, his fingers jabbing, spittle flying from his lips -- that you don't mind that so many concepts are whizzing by your ears.

You may not grasp his ideological philosophy, but you'll have a good time making the attempt.
