The title HE LOVES ME, HE LOVES ME NOT is more ironic and telling than the unknowing viewer would dare to guess. A whimsical love story, yes it is. But its whimsy is short-lived and fades quickly to concentrate on the dark underbelly of relationships, emotional attachment, and the complexity of the human spirit. Audrey Tautou delivers a beguiling performance as Angelique, a lovely and passionate young art student. Having just received a grant to work on a series of new paintings, she rushes through her days busily working while always finding time to send secret gifts to her lover, Loic (Samuel Le Bihan). Loic is a successful cardiologist who is older and busier than Angelique. But that does not deter her dedication to him, or sway her to consider dating a classmate who says he's in love with her. Halfway through the film, writer-director Laetitia Colombani employs a narrative technique that changes everything, bringing a chilling flip side to the story. A creative and colorful work, with excellent supporting roles played by Isabelle Carre and Clement Sibony, HE LOVES ME, HE LOVES ME NOT is poised to pounce as a new entry in the romantic thriller genre. The execution doesn’t quite come together, mostly because of an unnecessary “Memento”-like structure, but the film is still a clever look at romantic obsession.

A fascinating premise, but the film isn't quite grouned enough to strike the chords it strives for.

Nothing can prepare you for the twisty -- and twisted -- details the 26-year-old Colombani almost fiendishly brings to her story of misguided love.

An unsettling and often creepy little thriller, which at first appears to be fairly straightforward but then gets much craftier and considerably more interesting.

Colombani's double-sided view of events works like a jigsaw puzzle, but you may get the chills every time you learn where a new piece connects to an earlier one.

An off-kilter 'romance' with a wicked streak of dark humor.

It's more clever than brilliant, but folding two radically different interpretations of a kind gesture, a chance encounter and a Nat King Cole song heard on a car radio is a great trick.

A great deal of the fun of the movie has to do with the casting of Tatou in a role that is more complicated than her heart-shaped face, Bambi eyes and Amelie goodwill might lead you to expect.

The film is deft, delicious work, but a very different romantic fantasy than you probably expect.

[Take] madness — mixed with inspiration from watching The Sixth Sense. Add a touch of Mulholland Drive and a bag of heart-shaped jujubees, and you’ll just about have the flavor of He Loves Me.

A pretty nifty mystery about deranged love, and if nothing is truly startling, it's still smartly put together and completely entertaining.
