"American Splendor," comic-book writer Harvey Pekar's epic chronicle of his life and hard times as a file clerk at a VA hospital in Cleveland (a variety of artists supply the images), is both a portrait of an artist as a middle-aged curmudgeon and an insightful look at a side of working-class America rarely captured on film.
