Harold and Kumar Sequel?
by Scott Weinberg | November 29, 2004

Now Playing Magazine sat down with director Danny Leiner ("Dude, Where's My Car?," "Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle") to discuss the possibility of sequels: "I think the ship has sailed [on a Dude sequel]," he says. "For whatever reason, it took the studio a while to go for that."

He goes on to explain that Seann William Scott and Ashton Kutcher probably have their sights set on other projects (and are undoubtedly a lot pricier to hire these days), but that 'Harold and Kumar Go to Amsterdam' will be green-lit based on the original's DVD sales: "...I think it's going to depend on how the DVDs sell. If they become a big seller – as I'm hoping they will because I know there’s a lot of fans of the movie out there, and hopefully they’ll tell their friends and that kind of thing – maybe it will take off like an "Office Space" or a DVD like that. I actually think we have a good shot. We’ll know over the next couple of months, into February and March. Plus, I want to go to Amsterdam!"

It made $18M at the box office. It only cost about $15M to make tho. So if DVD sales go well, they'll make enough of a profit to do a sequel. Kinda like The Punisher, which grossed $40M and cost $35M to make. It did well enough on DVD that they're considering a sequel.

That's the beauty of DVD sales. Used to be that you could only get a sequel if the original did particularly well at the Box Office. But now with DVD sales becoming such a powerful revenue stream for the studios, a bona-fide box-offce flop can generate a sequel...if the DVDs sell well. But somehow I doubt we'll be seeing a Catwoman 2: Meow Harder.

I really hope they make a sequal
Fortunatly, unlike Office Space this is definatly a movie you can make a Sequal for. Is there any website that keeps track of DVD sales?... cause I'm really hoping to see this Harold and Kumar Go to Amsterdam and if they havn't sold enough yet, I better get my ass in gear and start demanding my friends (and then they demand their friends do) buy the movie also.
