Jet Li "Unleashed" Reviewed
by RT Staff | January 11, 2005
Discuss Article
According to a long-time contributor at the Official Jet Li website who claims to have attended the Paris premiere, the movie is very violent and that fans may be "surprised by the level of violence in it" because they "never seen him fight his opponents with such rage." However, at the end, this person adds that it is "All in all, the movie all hardcore Jet fans were waiting for since he left HK for Hollywood."

What this person said about Unleashed's emphasis on drama and the ultra violent fight scenes are consistent with what our sources have told us. You can take the part about it being the film that Jet fans have been waiting for since his HK days for it's worth. This is a longtime Jet Li fan.

For more fan reviews from the Paris premiere, hop over to the official Jet Li site.

The trailer for Jet Li's forthcoming actioner "Unleashed" has been online since late December, but if you haven't seen it, you can catch it here. Formerly titled "Danny the Dog," "Unleashed" stars Jet Li as Danny, a man who has been brainwashed by Bob Hoskins' character into believing he's a vicious attack dog whenever the collar around his neck is removed. Morgan Freeman plays a blind man who gives Danny back his humanity.

It is from the guys who did Kiss of the Dragon, which is my favorite Jet film outside of HK. The fight scenes will at least be pretty good. I know, the trailer doesn't impress me all that much - it's alright. I do like the fact that he's so brutal in the fight scenes tho.

I don't know about this one...
I want to like this movie, I really do...but the trailer didn't exactly fill me with confidence. Then again, it's just a trailer so I'll keep my fingers crossed.

And another thing...
...the fight scenes are choreographed by none other than Yuen Woo Ping, the same guy who did the fight scenes for Fist of Legend.

It seems to me that this film has a dramatic story and a degree of character development for Jet Li. Which I think will add a degree of importance to fight scene's that many of Jet Li's films have not had. The trailor was quite impressive, had a strong comic book story style. I.e. Brainwashed to kill - found by a blind piano tuner... Maybe it is the story that puts you lot off.

Has great potential to be really cheesy. That's probably it. I'm not put off by it. Could be really well done.

I love that they have crossed the "wild child" genre with a martial arts movie. Plus Luc Besson as a producer bodes well, imo. Jet Li is on a roll.....

I don't see how people can praise this movie. I felt sick to my stomach after watching it.

First of all, he has no acting abilities whatsoever. He's like Zoolander. He has two looks: a stupid little kid's smile and a constipated face. Chow-yun fat is a much better actor. Why make him try to act and why make him a dog? Why not just stick with fighting sequences like Tony Jaa's movies, which are much more entertaining as the film does not try to fake a story and just give the audience what they were expecting, some good asskicking and back flips.

Second of all, being a person of Chinese descent, I was so embarassed and ashamed by him. Jesus, you act (badly) like a dog and is essentially good for nothing but fighting. I'm not saying Chow Yun fat is winning any fans in this department after being banned from NY Chinatown after filming "The Corruptors" for the inaccurate and misleading portrayal of Chinese immigrants. Why not take a cue from Bruce Lee? He was very selective in choosing films that portray the Chinese people in a positive light. He created interest in Chinese martial arts and its principles and related that through his films.

I just cannot believe more people have not spoken out about this.

Jet Li, please go back to making films like "Once upon a time in China" I respected you back then.
