Stephen Chow's "Kung Fu Hustle" received nominations in 16 of 19 available categories for the 24th Hong Kong Film Awards, Variety reports. The only categories the movie didn't receive a nomination in are supporting actress, original song, and Asian film. Wong Kar Wai's "2046" received 12 noms including those for film and director, and Derek Yee's "One Night in Mongkok" received 11. Stephen Chow will compete with Tony Leung Chiu Wai, Jackie Chan, Alex Fong, and Daniel Wu for best actor honors. Zhang Ziyi will battle it out with Sylvia Chang, Yuen Qui, Karena Lam, and Cecilia Cheung for best actress. Winners will be announced in a ceremony held on March 27th. "Kung Fu Hustle" will be shown in select theaters March 18th.

Just so you guys know...
The Hong Kong Academy Awards is just a popularity contest. I don't take it seriously. Stephen Chow and Jackie Chan for best actor? They're not bad actors; they get the job done; it's just that their performances aren't something worthy of an award. Also, I read from a Chinese newspaper that critics and voters (the general public) have an equal say on the results.

It's also strange that Jackie Chan would get nominated for Best Actor for non-acting roles like Supercop where he's really just playing his normal Jackie Chan persona.

Each year I look at the nominations, I have to roll my eyes.

Honestly...
This was still one of the best films I saw last year. So albiet as it may that the awards aren't as serious as the oscars etc, this was a fantastic film and deserves recognition on some scale!!

My thoughts...
I don't know, sometimes the HKFAs get it right, like Cecilia Cheung winning best actress last year for Lost In Time.
I would be real surprised if Stephen Chow or Jackie Chan win best actor since Tony Leung + WKW typically = best actor win.
Best actress may be tougher to pick; normally I would say Zhang Ziyi would be a lock, but like Senh could be right concerning the popularity contest, which would make it tougher since she hasn't exactly warmed herself to the HK crowd lately.
Kung Fu Hustle will probably win best picture...it's practically saved the industry from a seriously money losing year, and thus will be rewarded.

The most ridiculous though unsurprisng nomination would be Jackie Chan's son Jaycee's best new performer nomination for Twins Effect 2. If there was ever a guy NOT made for movies...

Yeah, Kung Fu Hustle definitely deserves recognition. I wish other people in the HK movie industry would be as dedicated to the craft of filmmaking as Stephen Chow nowadays. The guy spent 3 years making one movie. Most HK movies are done in 3 months including preproduction, production, and post-production. It's no wonder most of what comes out of HK nowadays are just complete utter crap. And they constantly blame movie piracy for the industry's downfall. Even some of the stars agree that that's just a scapegoat; most HK films are just not that good nowadays. Most of them are direct-to-video quality. How a piece of utter crap like Twin Effects II can get nominated for anything is beyond me - even if two of my favorites HK stars are in.
