Diesel Takes Director's Chair for "Hannibal"
by RT Staff | February 15, 2005
Discuss Article
Vin Diesel, the star of Hannibal the Conqueror, will also try his hand at directing the story, Dark Horizons reports. "I'm going to direct it. The studio thought it couldn't be done for under 200 million so we went into soft pre-production and I found put I could get the budget down to 50 million. The process excited me so now I'm going to direct." The film tells the story of the great general who had a skill for surprise attacks. Diesel also stars in the forthcoming "The Pacifier."

Vin Diesel as director?
I don't know about this one. While he is really, really easy on the eyes, don't know if that qualifies him as a director (but then again, he can't be as bad as David Goyer so perhaps there's hope:)

Looks like his massive ego will get even bigger, now that he's given the opportunity to direct. I hope this flops. This guy has zero talent.

Action Hero? Yes! Director? No!
Let me preface this by saying I own all his movies. I'm a huge fan, but I have huge doubts about his directing ability. I think they should hand this one off to the master of Sandals & Swords, Mr. Ridley Scott.

It might not be all bad because he only got his role in Saving Private Ryan because of a short film he directed (and wrote too I think). So it's not like it's completely new to him.

if I'm not mistaken, arnold schwarzenegger directed an episode of tales from the crypt! no idea if it was good or not.
I liked vin diesel in saving private ryan, pitch black and chronicles of riddick. otherwise I don't really like him. so I don't care much for him directing a film where he stars in.

Hannibal
Hannibal is a huge historical figure whose life would play out as an awesome action movie and I just don't see Vin pulling off the role and I definitely think an accomplished director should take the helm.

Don't Knock Vin Til you've seen it.
I think Vin is probably more talented than Hollywood has allowed him to show, since Action stars are more bankable than any using talent. He clearly can make good decisions when he wants, and as evidence I show you his game studio, Tigra Games, which shows he is capable of making a quality product.

I'm not saying some of his movies aren't terrible (hated XXX but actually liked Riddick) but all I'm saying is give the guy a chance. He was awesome in Boiler Room.

Yes, he has directed before
and by most accounts he is more suited to that than to acting. He did do a short film which was very well received and a feature film that was accepted at Sundance. He also did some second unit work on SPR that made it into the film and, if you listen to the commentary on Pitch Black DVD, David Twohy says a few of the film's scenes are actually things that Diesel thought of.

Easily one of the most untalented Actor's in the business. Painful to watch at times.

Maybe when he's done directing this, they'll allow him to direct 'The Pacifier 2'

Vin Diesel as a Director
Yeah... has anyone seen that last few pictures that he has done? Plus we know what happens when an epic falls in the wrong hands (Oliver Stone's Alexander). Maybe he should fix his acting career before trying to become a director.

I guess Spielberg really liked his short film, so he created Vin's role in Saving Private Ryan just for him. Spielberg knows talent when he sees it, but I agree that the epics coming out of Hollywoods ass have all in all stunk lately. Im interested to see how Vin does.
