Chris Rock on the Rocks With Academy Members?
by RT Staff | February 15, 2005
Discuss Article
The Academy wants to give this year's awards ceremony some edge by tapping Chris Rock to host the show. Well, they got what they asked for when Rock, in the Feb. 4th issue of Entertainment Weekly, made some digs at the show by saying, "I never watched the Oscars. Come on, it's a fashion show. What straight black man sits there and watches the Oscars? Awards for art are [expletive deleted] idiotic." Apparently, some Academy members were angered by this and felt that Rock should step down, as reported by the Drudge Report on Sunday. However, Gil Cates, the show's producer, cleared the air in a statement, released Monday, by saying "Chris' comments over the past few weeks are meant to be humorous digs at a show that some people, obviously including Chris himself, think may be a bit too stuffy." Looks like Chris Rock isn't going anywhere.

Wow
Way to go Academy. Obviously, they've never seen any of Chris' stand-up because the differences between black and white people is basically his whole show! I love how someone can say something that is meant to be funny and everyone gets all up-in-arms over it. The reason people think the show is stuffy is because of uptight humorless people who took offense to this.

Gimme Steve Martin or Billy Crystal any day or even Whoopi, Chris Rock is more of a Grammy or Emmy award host.

I read that article, and Rock said a lot of truthful and very funny stuff about the Oscars that I can't help agree with. I watch the Oscars every year, and I agreed with what he was saying. The Academy just got angry because it was true.

Well they'll probably get more viewers out of this. It looks like the press is trying to make a big deal out of it, when it really isn't. I'm sure Chris's opening monologue will be funny and a little bit insulting too. Let's hope some of the stars will go along with it, and laugh at themselves too. I love the Oscars and look forward to it every year. I wish the focus would be to make the show shorter(like 2 hours).
