"Jacket" Director Steps on Toes at Press Junket
IGN Filmforce reports from the press junket for "The Jacket" that director John Maybury has a LOT of rather strong opinions about today's Hollywood. The young filmmaker took shots at "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" and "Memento" (while implying his film is better than both), soundly bashed the Academy Awards (calling it a 'corporate event'), wondered why Thelma Schoonmaker would win the Best Editing Oscar for a three-hour film ("The Aviator"), and basically called "Million Dollar Baby" 'a piece of expletive deleted.' Decide for yourself whether Maybury is admirably candid or surprisingly obnoxious by reading his comments right here.

on Mar 07 2005 04:24 PM Hmm...sounds like he's just trying to get some attention from the media. He seems really bitter. (Reply to this) |

on Mar 07 2005 06:34 PM I enjoyed The Jacket, but I'd hardly say it was a masterpiece. It was probably on par with Eternal Sunshine and Memento, in my mind. But that's not an insult. I really liked those movies a lot. But I do think this guy is getting an inflated ego for no reason! (Reply to this) |

on Mar 08 2005 06:11 AM I want to see The Jacket, it looks cool. I have to admit this guy sounds like a jerk, but on the otherhand, it's nice to see somone from Hollywood speak their mind. He needs to be careful though, this could get him black balled if he keeps it up. (Reply to this) |

on Mar 09 2005 12:10 PM Wow, talk about how some statements can easily be misconstrued. If you read what the guy actually said, it's nowhere near as 'sensational' as implied in this news bit. Also, when he was referring to Eternal Sunshine and Memento, it seems like he just mentioned them because they were both films that played with structure like the Jacket. Whatever, he has opinions. And they're not even too far off the mark. (Reply to this) |
on Mar 10 2005 11:52 AM I agree with a good number of his points. Most notably the comment about "Million Dollar Baby" being 'a piece of expletive deleted.' I couldn't have described it any better than that. (Reply to this) |
