"Darko" Director Gets a Cast to Tell His "Southland Tales"
by Scott Weinberg | April 22, 2005
Discuss Article
Thanks to ComingSoon.net for sharing with us an enticing new press release from the folks at Cherry Road Films. "Donnie Darko" fans can rejoice because writer/director Richard Kelly is ready to get rolling with his "Southland Tales."

Described as "an ensemble piece set in the futuristic landscape of Los Angeles on July 4, 2008, as it stands on the brink of social, economic and environmental disaster," the film will star Seann William Scott, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, and Sarah Michelle Gellar. Kelly and his crew are gearing up to start production on August 1st, and the young filmmaker seems pretty excited about his new project: "The film is going to be a strange hybrid of the sensibilities of Andy Warhol and Philip K. Dick."

Such a talented director and such a talentless cast... I wonder what the hell will come out of this project...

Oh boy! I've been waiting and waiting for Richard Kelly to release another film! This is great news. Hopefully. And don't worry, Aoiboy. A good enough director can sometimes coax good performances out of not-very-good actors.

ick. Another movie w/ the Rock and Stiffler? What in the name of christ is Kelly thinking? I know he's a stuck up jerko since DD became a "cult hit", but...(twitching)...I guess if the guy can put the ever worthless Drew Barrymore or the evenly worthless Swayze in one of the best films of our era, maybe he can pull a miracle out of his bum-bum. Dunno. Sounds scary...

Sarah Michelle Gellar, Seann William Scott and The Rock have done some very good things recently. The Rock stole the show in Be Cool and is getting better. Gellar was always praised for her work in Buffy, and Ebert Roper praises her a lot. And without Scott, American Wedding would of been a straight to DVD release.

All 3 have had their fair share of bumps in their career, but its fascinating how they all made money.

And Drew Barrymore is one of the most underrated actresses in Hollywood at the moment. Fever Pitch has just crossed rotten into fresh.

SOUTHLAND TALES is the biggest movie for 2006 for me (and Xmen3 comes close). DD was the best thing that happened to cinema a few years ago.

Kelly has another cult hit on its hands.

I agree that Drew Barrymore is often underrated, but... come on ! The Rock, Stifler and Buffy ?!?! I think that, comparing the cast of this film with Donnie Darko's, little Daveigh Chase had better acting chops than these three altogether !! I will still give a chance to Kelly and hope I'm wrong, but certainly this piece of news is not doing much for getting hype about the new movie

Give them a chance
Often, actors give bad performances because they are working with bad directors who are directing bad scripts. If "Southland Tales" is half as well-written as "Donnie Darko," it will be terrific.

The rock and stiffler
Were together in that one forgettable action flick and they had ZERO chemistry. If that translates to this film, it is going to suck. It is going to take a miracle to coax something better out of them. Buffy I can handle.

sarah michelle geller has a face only tv can love.
the chick has zero screen appeal or presence......she makes lousy choices in film roles and has yet to appear in a film that has even remotely entertained me.

i love the fact that her own agent talked sh*t about her talent. it speaks volumes....

she is our modern day pia zadora...

I don't see why everyone has to spend their time talking trash about Kelly and his actors. Somebody finally makes a movie that isn't formulaic and has a talented and respected cast and you have to smear it. I don't understand. Donnie Darko was an excellent film, and you can expect the same out of the next one, Southland Tales. At least reserve your opinions until you've actually seen it. And I don't know what criteria you're judging on, but Drew Barrymore is a talented actress and a wonderful person who doesn't deserve your harsh criticisms.
