"Kingdom" Leads a Less Than Heavenly Weekend at the Box Office
by Scott Weinberg | May 09, 2005
Discuss Article
"Officially" starting the Summer Movie Season with somewhat of a fizzle are a pair of wide release newcomers and a handful of hangers-on. Ridley Scott's "Kingdom of Heaven" took the #1 spot by a healthy margin, although total box office numbers continue to lag as compared to last year. "Heaven" grossed an estimated $20 million on 3,200 screens, which was more than enough to give it the top spot, despite hauling in less cash than anticipated. In second place ...

... was Elisha Cuthbert's horror remake "House of Wax," which grossed about $12.2 million at 3,100 theaters. Dropping 57% from its opening weekend was Disney's "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy," which made $9.1m in its sophomore session. In fourth place was New Line's race-relations drama "Crash," which pulled in a fairly impressive $9.1m on less than 1,900 screens. In fifth was the Nicole Kidman / Sean Penn political thriller "The Interpreter," which added another $7.5m to a box office total that presently stands at $54m total. Next Friday sees a quartet of releases that will try to make a quick killing before "Revenge of the Sith" overtakes the multiplexes: the Will Ferrell soccer comedy "Kicking & Screaming" and the J. Lo / Jane Fonda concoction "Monster-in-Law" open in wide release, while the crime thrillers "Mindhunters" and "Unleashed" open semi-wide. As always you can get a closer look at the box office numbers by visiting the Rotten Tomatoes Box Office Page!

I saw Kingdom of Heaven... not a bad picture overall, but let's face it: Orlando Bloom's not a good actor. I noticed ever since Lord of the Rings. In Kingdom I had to stand two hours of him putting the same face whether he was meeting his long lost dad, whether his dad was dying, whether he was victorious in a battle, whether he was tempted by a seductress... The rest of the cast was great and the technical aspects saved the movie for me, but Scott should have gone for some other young actor that can actually carry two hours of ACTING. Jake Gyllenhaal for example.

I agree with your comments on Orlando Bloom ..... .. The character of BALIAN required a lot of intensity and different emotions as per the various sequences which probably a more seasoned actor could only portray ........albert

I think that the box office results have more to do with the simple lack of quality and imagination coming out of Hollywood. How many of this year's BIG films are remakes, sequels, prequels.

I am also getting quite tired of to-cute to-cool to-hip animated films being produced. Toy Story was excellent, Shrek really good, the Incredibles was very good, but after a while they all seems to mesh together...

Money should be invested in good scripts, scenarios and stories.

I agree with you...all the cut-to-the-chase cute animated films being produced is over done and I am too quite tired of it. It would be cool to see PG-13 or R rated animated films for adults. Maybe it's why many Americans are moving away from traditional American "cutely" animations and into Japanese animation.

As for "Kingdom Under Heaven"...it was pretty boring. Had alot of boring characters *yawn*. The only good characters that were fun to watch were the Muslims.

Suprised
I'm not suprised that Kingdom didn't do real well mainly because Orlando Bloom was such a poor choice for a battle hardened warrior role, but I never would have imagined it would only make $20 Million on 3200 screens.

WHY WHY WHY WHY WHY.....
Is hollywood so surprised that action movies are doing so poorly right now????? DUH! Everyone's holding on to their money for Episode III. Same thing happened with all the LOTR FLicks. I'm sick of people complaining about the Lagging B.O. Just wait, stupids....

Someone needs to get a grip. The B.O. IS lagging and everything is a damn sequel or remake. Star Wars better make 400 million, or its going to be a disaster.

It will make $400 million because for the last few weeks...there hasn't been a movie worth the money to see. Movies before Star Wars that has been released haven't done well, because people feel a lot like they are just fill-me-ins movies. Wait...when Star Wars 3 comes out and people get the chance to see it...the box office will be full of cash again.

In my opinion this movie wasn't bad because of Orlando's acting (which was NOT up to par, I'll agree) as much as it was due to the terrible script! I mean it wasn't a bad movie, it was a dissapointing one. It could have been so great if it was just a bit more focused. There were too many characters and the director tried to encorporate too many themes into the story. It was so scattered that I felt really cheated.

The one thing the movie did have was a great war scene at the end. I loved some of the tatics Bailin's forces used in the battle.
