"Sith" Takes More Revenge Over the Holiday Weekend

Despite some rock-solid competition, "Star Wars Episode 3: Revenge of the Sith" grossed an impressive $70.8 million in its second weekend. Bolstered by a 4-day holiday frame, George Lucas' sixth and final space opera reigned supreme over a pair of wide-release newcomers -- but the competition did pretty darn well, too. The DreamWorks animated comedy "Madagascar" drew the family ticket, grossing $61 million over the Memorial Day weekend (in over 4,100 theaters), while the Adam Sandler sports flick "The Longest Yard" was close behind with a tally of $60 million in just over 3,600 theaters.

Well behind in 4th place was "Monster-in-Law," which added $11m to its total grosses ($60m), and "Kicking & Screaming," which made $6.5m, bringing its total up to $44m. "Sith"s total domestic box office thus far is $271m, and its doing some serious business overseas as well. ($520m worldwide in less than two weeks!)

Next week sees the release of three newcomers: Warner Bros.' "The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants," the Ron Howard / Russell Crowe sports drama "Cinderella Man," and Catherine Hardwicke's skateboarding docu-drama "Lords of Dogtown." I too was amazed that three films grossedover $60. I thought that it must have been a mistake when I first saw it but abviously it's not. The most suprising out of the three is surely "The Longest Yard". Did anyone see this coming?

must have been a whole bunch of families doing "memorial day" stuff and half the family wanted to see Sith, the part of the family that had already seen Sith went to see "the longest yard" and the women and children who where too big of wussies to go see star wars went and saw Madasgar. Ofcourse there was just the kids, just the jocks, and just the geeks who went and saw the movies individually, but I bet the multi-plexs made up for alot of this revenue.

True. It's a little like Adidas or Nike. No matter what the genuine quality (made in china), as long as it looks good, and has the "name" people will go for it.

Revenge of the Sith is a great film. I have watched it several times...and I have enjoyed myself immensely. I imagine that the film will finish somewhere around the $400 million mark.

Next week, I don't foresee any serious contender to dethrone Revenge of the Sith from the #1 spot, except for Cinderella Man. The Longest Yard is a very bad film, and Madagascar leaves alot to be desired. Cinderella Man is getting great press, although many insiders are calling it Rocky Redux. We'll definitely have to wait and see, but I think that Star Wars might actually pull off another #1 come Sunday (perhaps in the $35 million range). Cinderella Man might pull off a respectable $20 million. The Longest Yard will drop -- perhaps as much as 55%. But Madagascar may fair decently well, because it is a children's film enjoying incredibly wide release.

I agree with the_game... this is a great film and it deserves every penny. Just hope it'll beat the abysmal Episode 1 with the most money! Can it beat Titanic? Probably not, but summers coming, and only time can tell!

something needs to beat TITANIC.i dont think that it was a good film boring ,you know what happeans , the boat hits a burg then sinks hours later what a surprise.it bothers me that it is the highest grossing film of all time.
