Chuck Russell Bites Into "Piranha" Remake
by Scott Weinberg | June 08, 2005
Discuss Article
Our daily remake news, courtesy of Variety: Director Chuck Russell, along with Chiller Films, is planning to mount a remake of Joe Dante's "Piranha." Working from John Sayles' original screenplay, as well as a new spec script from Josh Stolberg & Peter Goldfinger, Russell hopes to bring this tale of underwater carnage to a modern audience.

Producer Mark Canton has some enthusiasm for the project: "We want to take people back to a horror classic which was an enormous success in its day but which will benefit from updated technology." And Mr. Russell has already earned his stripes in the remake department; his 1988 adaptation of "The Blob" is generally well-received by the hardcore horror fans. The director's most recent films were "Bless the Child" and "The Scorpion King."

Unfortunately, updated technology doesn't mean a good script.

Outsmarted?
It's just that they make the people so stupid, the animals have nothing to compete with. "O, I'm just going to go and take a dip in this murky African jungle river. What are those bubbles? Probably a hot spring, yippy!" Spash! gobble, gobble, gobble. "Susy!!! But Mike, those waters looked so safe"
Please!

Chuck Russell's in good company. James Cameron did the sequel. With horror films doing so well these days - including remakes - it looks like everyone's trying get a peice of the pie while it's still hot.

the original uses great sayle's script
it's not a bad story / film if i remember right; sayles wrote piranha and alligator back in the late 70s / early 80s .... it's got a good "the mlitary did it" subplot ..... this could be a good one .... remake Alligator while you are at it!

If I remember correctly, the original movie was more of a spoof of jaws then a horror movie.
