Four Actors Tapped to Star in Zemeckis' "Beowulf"
by Scott Weinberg | June 15, 2005
Blog Article | Discuss Article
Variety reports that a quartet of well-known performers have been invited to star in Robert Zemeckis' upcoming adaptation of "Beowulf." Ray Winstone ("King Arthur"), Anthony Hopkins ("Hannibal"), Brendan Gleeson ("28 Days Later"), and Robin Wright Penn ("Unbreakable") "would be committing to a process that is more like a regular movie than the voiceover work commonly done for 3-D animated films," as the technology-happy Mr. Zemeckis is planning to deliver a "Beowulf" presentation not unlike "The Polar Express."

Also of particularly exciting note is that the screenplay for this project was written by the unlikely team of Roger Avary ("Pulp Fiction," "The Rules of Attraction") and Neil Gaiman ("Neverwhere" and the upcoming "MirrorMask"). More info on this rather intriguing project as soon as it's made available...

So does this mean a great story gets ruined by dead eyes animation?

No joking, I'm always a fan of Roger Avary's stuff. And would much rather see it acted out by great actors like Hopkins, Gleeson, and Wright.

Zemeckis-0 Gunnarson-1
From what I can tell, the movie "Beowulf and Grendel" directed by Sturla Gunnarson due out in October, is going to be a much more real depiction of the story than Zemeckis' idea. From what I can tell about the Z-man's film, he's adding things that don't belong in the story. This amzing epic poem is perfect without adding a sexy "monster" like Angelina Jolie, as Grendel's Mother/Queen of Darkness. I'm not sure how that is going to work. Gunnarson's film is also done the old-fashioned way: live action and no computer special effects. This is the way those ancient Vikings would have wanted it!
