New Line Shakes Up Their "Hairspray"
by Scott Weinberg | June 23, 2005

Variety clues us in on the comings & goings in relation to New Line's musical adaptation of "Hairspray." Seems that stage directors Jerry Mitchell & Jack O'Brien, the team that was signed to co-helm the film version, are no longer connected to the project.

The studio hopes to enlist Rob Marshall ("Chicago") as their new director, mainly because after his first film, Mr. Marshall is definitely a "known quantity," but also because he directed "Hairspray" during its heyday on the stage.

The changes in crew have predicated a schedule alteration as well; "Hairspray" was originally set for to start production later this year, but will now have to wait until early next year. "Hairspray" is, of course, the musical based on the John Waters flick of the same name.

Being New Line and all...I'd have thought they'd have gone right to that talentless hack Brett Ratner.

Chicago was highly overrated.
