"Batman" Begins (and Continues) to Rule the Box Office Roost

For the second weekend in a row, Christopher Nolan's "Batman Begins" claimed the #1 spot at the weekend box office races. The superhero flick pulled in over $26 million in its second weekend, giving it a healthy margin of victory over the competition.

Debuting in second place with a $20 million haul was the Nicole Kidman / Will Ferrell romantic comedy "Bewitched," which bowed in more than 3,100 theaters, while another holdover, "Mr. & Mrs. Smith," snagged third place with $16.8 million. Fourth and fifth place went to a pair of newcomers: "Herbie: Fully Loaded" tallied just under $13 million from 3,500 venues, while George Romero's "Land of the Dead" pulled in just over $10 million at 2,200 theaters.

Next week sees the release of two more hopefuls, one a heavy hitter (Steven Spielberg's "War of the Worlds") and the other ... not so much (Martin Lawrence's kid's basketball comedy "Rebound").

Yes....Batman was good.....we know. But I'm wondering why no reviews have been posted for War of the Worlds yet??? I have a feeling it's going to be better than expected. Speilberg has a history of surpizing us.

I heard Tom Cruise is not allowing any early screenings for critics and press because he is so upset about the press ripping him apart about his antics and beliefs.

well its actually all about speilberg and his work. this is his project he wanted to do this since he was a kid. tom does supply an improtant part of the mopvie since he is the leading man. but more of the credit should go to speilberg since its all based on his interpretation of the H.G.Wells novel. yea they don't want critics posting any reviews before its opening day which is wenesday. i can't wait for this movie!!! one of the most anticipated movies of the year for me :-D

i doubt tom cruise had any power over whether the film got screened for critics. he may be a powerful celeb, but not THAT powerful

im sure the movie will be fine. normally a film not being screened by critics is a death sentence, but this is speilberg, come on, you know it's gonna be great.

speilberg + aliens = success

It should open to 100 million the first weekend. Hollywood needs all the help it can get.

I'm looking forward to "War of the Worlds." I'm hoping it won't disappoint me like "Independence Day" did a few years ago.

I only wish Spielberg had decided to adapt his film more directly from the HG Wells novel...setting the story in late 19th century London. The contrast between horse-drawn carriages and invading high-tech Martians would have been fabulous fun.

It's nice to see the good films like Batman and Mr. and Mrs. Smith beat off the crappier new releases. Definitely looking forward to War of the Worlds. And I'm right with ya South_park3000.

That's not possible
Maybe if it was released on Firday, but it will blow off too much steam on Wednesday and Thursday. I'm expecting around an $80 million opening weekend along with about $60 million made on Wednesday and Thursday.

His review was pretty intresting... while I havnt seen the movie, Im concerned with what he talked about... Batman was one of the best films I have seen in a while. Christain Bale is the man... Tom Cruise is a morron...
