Eastwood Drafts Three Soldiers for "Flag" Duty
by Scott Weinberg | July 07, 2005
Discuss Article
Legendary filmmaker Clint Eastwood ("The Outlaw Josey Wales," "Million Dollar Baby") has just started casting his next project, which is a WWII drama entitled "Flags of Our Fathers." Recently enlisted were Ryan Phillippe ("Antitrust"), Adam Beach ("Windtalkers"), and Jesse Bradford ("Swimfan"), and the trio will be starring in a film inspired by the true-life accounts found in James Bradley's "Flags of Our Fathers: Heroes of Iwo Jima."

Mr. Eastwood will be working alongside producer Steven Spielberg to bring this epic tale to the screen; Bradley's book was adapted into screenplay form by celebrated scribe Paul Haggis ("Crash").

"Flags of Our Fathers" begins production next month, with location shooting in Chicago, Los Angeles, Washington D.C., and Iceland.

Paul Haggis writing the script? The watchful eye of successful moviemaker and director of Saving Private Ryan, Steven Spielberg? Director of Unforgiven and Mystic River, Clint Eastwood, directing? If all of those elements don't make this movie look promising, I don't know what would.

Eastwood directing, Haggis writing and the talented and underused Phillippe and Beach, just make this sound damn good.
