Spielberg to Attack Another Sci-Fi Remake?
by Scott Weinberg | August 29, 2005
Discuss Article
Variety reports that Universal's remake of "When Worlds Collide," which was previously penciled in as a Stephen Sommers gig, may actually be directed by Mr. Steven Spielberg.

Sommers recently stepped aside from the project so he could direct the high-concept comedy "A Night at the Museum" for Fox, which leaves an opening that very well could be occupied by the master himself. At the very least, Mr. Spielberg looks to be on board as a producer.

Based on the 1951 sci-fi classic by Rudolph Maté, "When Worlds Collide" details what happens when the world is threatened with collision by a stray planetoid. In many ways, "Worlds," which was based on the novel by Edwin Balmer, acted as inspiration for movies like "Deep Impact" and "Armageddon."

Directorially, Mr. Spielberg is currently hard at work helming "Munich," and (fingers crossed) should move on to "Indiana Jones 4" some time early next year.

At least its not Sommers
Although I don't care if Spielberg does that (although that would be cool) as long as it's anyone other than Stephen Sommers. His movies are really not very good and I wouldn't Worlds to turn into another bad joke filled, bad CGI laden suckfest, ala the two Mummy movies.

yawn, spielbergs a master but this sounds like a crapfest seriously how bad does a film have to be for Sommer to not want to direct it.

Stay away Spielberg, as much as your declared the sci-fi king, I don't really care for your sci-fi films and rather prefer your other work. So please just go make Indy 4.

How about ANYONE makes an original film. Remakes and TV sitcom movies are what the Hollywood number crunchers call "Pre-sold." I hope the bubble is broken soon, after this summer's disappointing box-office take. There are millions of writers out there with good, original ideas. What a waste of everyone's time.

I echo the sentiment...
...anyone but Sommers. However, I would too prefer an original movie from Spielberg (my favorite director).

Or better yet, if they absolutely have to remake something, why not remake a movie that wasn't done right in the first place, like Starship Troopers.

Actually, I think I'd rather see a remake by Sommers rather any movie by Uwe Boll

Spielberg should step towards a different genre, like how about a romantic comedy starring Tom Cruise and Drew Barry-no-more...Call it, when worlds collide, whoops _puke_

Remakes are OK but...
...why not remake something more human like The Day the Earth Stood Still or
even The Man Who Fell to Earth.

Can Super "I just made a mess of Star Wars" Egomaniac Georgy Lucas be
far off remaking THX 1138??

I believe Logan's Run is in talks too. Is Bryan Singer still interested in that? Wasn't the Island
essentially a tweaked remake of that?

I'm not sure about Indie 4. If Lucas f#@%!ks with the script I'm not interested.

it doesnt matter who does it i dont want to see it! im soooo sick of remakes and spinoffs that generally suck!! the only half decent movies have been based on books and true stories like Cinderella Man, Constant Gardner, Sin City, ect. while Herbie, Dukes of Hazzard, Bewitched, Beauty Shop and countless others all suck
