Malick's "New World" Gets a New Release Date
Variety reports that Terrence Malick's eagerly anticipated "The New World" has been moved from a November 9th release date to a (limited) Christmas Day bow and a wide release on January 13th.
New Line distribution president David Tuckerman said the "change was made because the film "won't be done in time" for a Nov. 9 launch."
New Line is smelling some awards consideration for the historical epic (that stars Colin Farrell, Christopher Plummer, and Christian Bale) which explains the late-December "qualifying run" that'll occur a few weeks prior to its full-scale release.

Harry Potter comes out the week after that and it will lose a lot of business to that. And Harry Potter is also gonna be up for some awards this year, no doubt. (Reply to this) |

Mudhole writes: on Sep 02 2005 11:42 PM Saying it "won't be done in time" is so much more honest than the usual BS that surrounds a release date change. I don't know why, but I'm impressed they didn't try to make excuses for that. (Reply to this) |

alsanali writes: on Sep 03 2005 02:05 AM Terrence Malick and Christian Bale alone would be enough to interest me, but both of them working together sounds Awesome. As far as Farrell, he's bound to make a good epic some time. Maybe this is it. (Reply to this) |

jeanpaul writes: on Sep 03 2005 06:13 AM New release date? Yeah, right. NEW release dates equals producers and directors who are NOT sure, they have good stuff on their hands, and they try to fix stuff at the 99th second... Well, it's Mallick, so I'm still positive anyways. Good to be positive always. (Reply to this) |

lovelykeira writes: on Sep 03 2005 12:45 PM Damn Guess I'll have to just keep waiting for it. Although it is probably a wise move to get away from all that stiff competition in November. And Cold Mountain didn't do as well as expected becouse it really wasn't that good of a film. (Reply to this) |

insanemansam5 writes: on Sep 03 2005 02:19 PM Cold Mountain didn't flop it made 95-million dollars and was oscar nominated. As for the date change it makes sense to release this film on christmas day if its going to be an oscar contender. P.S I think Peter Jackson will get nominated for king kong (Reply to this) |

RealBlast3 writes: on Sep 03 2005 07:33 PM In reply to this comment (#825762) Cold Montain Flopped?!?! Um, I am sorry but you are wrong on that one, not that I am a fan of it, I hated that it was trying to be the Oscar foil to Return of the King and cheered when it was snubbed in the major Oscar categories because it cleared the way for the Lord of the Rings sweep BUT.... Cold Mountain grossed nearly 100 million at the box office, and yes the film did have a big budget, but when you consider the fact that it was a period piece about the Civil War with out any super stars in it (Nicole Kidman is a relatively "bankable" star, her studio movies do always gross between 40 and 90 million or so, but she's hardly a box office juggernaut and Jude Law certainly isn't) or no big American movie stars, the movie did extremely well all things considering. Certainly NOT a Flop! (Reply to this) |
