Tony Scott Talks About His "Warriors" Remake
by Scott Weinberg | October 12, 2005
Discuss Article
MyMovies.net had a recent sit-down with director Tony Scott ("Domino," "Man on Fire") and the always-busy filmmaker had a few rather interesting things to say about his upcoming remake of "The Warriors" and the original film, as directed by Walter Hill.

"I see it as "Kingdom of Heaven" meets "The Warriors" because with these gangs, instead of having twenty or thirty guys, I‘m going to have three thousand, five thousand guys in the LA river beds and it‘s going to look like LA during the riots," Tony told us explaining "I love the original movie, that‘s why I‘m in doing this but I‘m not going to copy the original".

The remake is a Paramount / MTV Films production, and it's expected to get underway some time in 2006.

Well, this is one remake I think I could actually enjoy. The original was awesome at the time, but watching it now is quite a different experience, since it's actually much slower than I remember it being as a teenager (or maybe it's because movies have just gotten faster) Tony could certainly be the man to put a fresh spin on it. Although I hope he keeps the "Warriors, come out to play-ay" scene. Still one of the most unnerving ever.

Concerns
The original was indeed a great movie. That always makes me nervous about remakes. One of the great things about the original was how each gang had a specific look. This idea of thousands of gang members in the streets is not my favorite. Can you imagine "The Warriors" with 1,000 baseball furies?

Along the same lines, if the gangs really were that large there would be no way for any police force to handle them. That is just getting a little too unrealistic for me. I know the rally scene in the original had thousands of people, but that was the point. They were unorganized and the idea was that they could not be stoped if they banded together. Which in turn made the Warrior's struggle herculean. Because the gangs did come together to hunt them down.

Yeah, that's just what "The Warriors" was missing- big CGI armies of gang members...

Oh dear lord I don't dare to imagine Tony Scoot directing action on that scale. He has a ridiculous amount of cuts just focusing on two or three people. This movie is going to give people seizures.

1000s? dude.....is a hack...while his films are visually stunning none of them have depth or are memorable.

i consider him worse then uwe boll because hollywood actually believes in his bullsh*t.

Well, one can hope he gets over his fascination with fast cuts and the cute camera tricks and plays it more straightforward, like he did with True Romance or Days of Thunder (although DOT is not a good movie by any stretch)

And masta_chill, "The Warriors" was a 1979 Walter Hill movie about a New York gang who attends a city-wide gang meeting where a man named Cyrus suggests the gangs band and they can take over the city. When the Warriors are falsely accused of killing Cyrus, they have to work their way back to their home turf, fighting the other city gangs along the way. It's a great movie, although a bit slow by today's standards.

Tony Scott
The thousands of gang members is no different than the original... In those days I bet there were thousands of gang members rallying up. So who cares. Tony Scott and his team know what they're doing. Walter Hill is still involved, so no one has to worry that there's going to be any significant, "realism," changes.

Tony Scott has some of the best cinematography, editing combinations. And I personally like his style. I like all his movies, and I respect that he's doing something different, when really the only thing he's trying to do is entertain the thousands of fans who are leaving theaters.

Time for a change in the film industry, someone's gotta start somewhere. Someday, maybe not soon, people will see Tony Scott with a whole new pair of eyes, and he'll be we known for what he did! Well known!

Look to make the warriors with out the baseball furies is a mistake, i got great respect for Tony Scott as a Director but some movies can't be remade by leaving out anything important. I want to see the remake but not with out the furies.
