Aeon Flux Not Screening for Critics
by Gareth J. Von Kallenbach | November 29, 2005
Blog Article | Discuss Article
Following the assertion that Charlize Theron only took the lead in "Aeon Flux" for the money comes this bit of news: Paramount won't screen the flick for the press.

In what is always a very bad sign, Paramount has decided not to screen
"Aeon Flux" in advance for critics. This is usually a sign that the film will be an absolute stinker, and that they are trying to make a quick buck opening weekend before being savaged by the press.

This info comes from Gareth at Skewed & Reviewed, and can be confirmed by film critics across the country.

Starring Charlize Theron, Marton Csokas, and Jonny Lee Miller, "Aeon Flux" has been delayed a few times, but will finally open this Friday with nothing in the way of new release competition. And despite the lack of press screenings, I know at least one movie critic who's still holding out hope that "AF" is a mindlessly entertaining action flick: me.

let the suckfest begin!
If they wanted to make $$ with this film- they really should have followed the cartoon more closely and shown a lot more skin. Aeon only wears a few leather straps. That would get the 18-24 males in the theaters in a hurry- a chance to see Charlize Theron's boobies!

Boobs don't make the movie
You can do that already in "Reindeer Games", but they weren't worth the price of admission then and I doubt they would be now.

Besides, I don't think it's going to work for DOA.

NEWSFLASH!
Nobody involved with this film had actually seen any of the original cartoons. They found a popular title with a female lead, and created a film that doesn't remotely resemble the original work. They could have called it "Miss Fancypants" and no one would have remarked that it was a rip off on Aeon Flux.

Years ago they wanted to make Beavis and Butthead, MTVs hottest property as a Live action film with David Spade and Adam Sandler. It was only when series creator Mike Judge mentioned how much cheaper an animated film would be that the studio left it alone. Point is, suits who do not know the source, should at least hire those who do to create it. Otherwise, we get junk.

Whenever a movie isn't screened for critics its becuase they are afraid of it getting trashed and ruining the opening weekend. I believe the last movie to do this was Alien vs. Predator, and we all know how that turned out.

AVP actually did screen for us, they just did it at 10 PM Thursday night which made it hard for people to get a review ready for the morning. I actaully had mine ready to go. We had a huge run of traffic as I broke the news that it was PG-13 which caused me getting a ton of flame male until we posted the official release.

I agree that they took what could have been a cool movie based on the original animated series, and then put in Charlize Theron and Hollywoodized it.

I've said in the forums that I think Charlize Theron was a horrible choice for the lead role. We're looking for someone like Carrie Ann Moss, but instead we get someone like Meg Ryan.

Not surprised. They're bombarding us with ads everywhere and making sure we don't see the negative reviews until it's too late. A clever strategy to make us oblivious to a movie sucking.

The only flaw: We have seen the trailer. We know.

I don't believe you guys. How could an action movie about a scantily clad heroine starring an Oscar winning actress not be good? Oh wait.

Does this sort of instance really matter to audiences? I doubt they even hear of such "news".

Just once... well, more than once... there should be a good film that doesn't screen for critics. Would it get the same bad publicity?

I'm sure Wireless magazine will give this flick high marks. It'd champion a Troma film for a nickel.

Carrie Ann Moss? Not quite.
They should have approached Lara Flynn Boyle...she's a dead-ringer for Aeon Flux. Even her voice is a decent match. Of course, that wouldn't have been enough to save a film even the studio has lost faith in.

I am screening this Thursday at 10:00PM - by far the most strange time I've had for a screening. They are clearly trying to keep it away from everyone while at the same time screening it at the 11th hour, but I'll be writing my review after the screening so that it will be up bright and early Friday.

I smelled a turd from the get go. If the most creative thing in the movie they could show for the preview is freakin' grass, that's not a particularly good sign.

I remember going to see a screening of "Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers" (1995) on a Thursday night at 10 or 11 p.m., just hours before it opened the next day.

But Charlize Theron is a damn fine fox and a great actress who can be pretty badass. A lot better than Angelina, anyway. I'm sorry, but AG looks like a freaking kook out there with guns twice the size of her arms! Unless she gets naked, there is no way I'm watching Tomb Raider 3. She just looks too ridiculous, like she's trying way too hard to be tough. At least Charlize looks like she really can kick some ass. She's quick and sleek like Carrie-Anne, at least. And let's not forget the lady broke her neck and was nearly rendered a quadraplegic (I'm not certain on the spelling there - just a heads up). I'm definitely going to see the movie in the hope that, while I shall probably derive little to no intellectual stimulus, I can at least enjoy watching one of my favorite actresses blow stuff up.

I'm surprised people have only hinted at comparisons with catwoman. No, that film didn't screen for press either, but it turned out to be one of the most thought-provoking and intelligent movies of the year. OK, i cant believe i got through that with a straight face. remember the bit with sharon stone slathering beauty cream on her body because it made her stronger? classic.

we actually did have a screener for catwoman here but it was tricky. what they did was screen the new Bourne film at 7 and Catwoman at 9 at a theater 20 minutes away. This made it next to impossible for critics to get from the one to the other.
