"Serenity 2" Might Be Heading to TV
Despite some disappointing box office figures (it didn’t do too bad, but disappointing performances in some countries led to others cancelling its theatrical outing altogether) the brilliant "Serenity" looks like it might be set to spawn a sequel. That’s the good news. The bad news? It won’t be in 35mm.
According to IGN FilmForce, Joss Whedon’s space serial might continue as a telemovie series, with "Serenity 2" going straight to the tube – the SciFi Channel, in fact. The SciFi Channel is part of the NBC Universal family.
Though Joss Whedon’s camp – that’s his camp, not the man himself…yet – has denied that a plan for a lower-budget telemovie sequel is in the works, it’s still possible that there is something simmering away here.
And yes folks, they would have to have Whedon’s approval if they were to do it, even if he didn’t helm it. (Just like the “Buffy” film sequel they wanted to do that would’ve starred Kristy Swanson again – and also, the new “Buffy” TV show that they tried to do ‘without’ Captain Tightpants pop.)
So keep your fingers crossed, Browncoats, and be sure to hit a DVD store on 12/20. That's when you can add "Serenity" to your DVD collection.

nogard64 writes: on Dec 02 2005 11:11 AM sad this movie was the real deal, serenity was incredibly entertaining million times better than that other little know Space Sci Fi movie series. I just wish the movie would have recieved more recognition, but I guess its all about hype these days and not about quality. (Reply to this) |

Hieremias writes: on Dec 02 2005 11:19 AM Only with Joss Whedon The "low budget" part doesn't scare me much, since the series itself was fairly low-budget and Whedon did just fine. It's amazing to me that the movie was made for 1/4 the cost of Revenge of the Sith, yet was so much better. The worst thing Whedon could do is to sign off the IP to the Sci-Fi channel and have nothing to do with it. I desperately hope that if Whedon doesn't direct, he at least writes any new Firefly/Serenity material. Please, don't hand it over to second-rate Sci-Fi channel hacks. (Reply to this) |

FallenTusken writes: on Dec 02 2005 11:58 AM Huh? Okay, I don't understand. Joss Whedon's camp denies this and Universal has no comment. Where exactly is this coming from? Don't get me wrong. I love Firefly and Serenity, and I desperately want to see more, but as far as I can see, this is just a tease. I hope this "news" isn't just a ploy to get people to buy Serenity on DVD. I'm sure Serenity's DVD sales will be huge, based solely on Firefly's DVD sales. (Reply to this) |

VML writes: on Dec 02 2005 06:00 PM I'm happy to hear that. "Serenity" was one of those movies in which I was wanting to see more of. I don't care if its only going to be on TV. Seeing what happens after the first movie matters to me. (I usually hate sequels, but I only like them if the first movie was really good and made me crave for more.) (Reply to this) |

Infernal writes: on Dec 02 2005 06:26 PM Ugh. Serenity disappointed me. It was a bit boring, if you ask me. The movie took the same route as the show it derived from. The show was cancelled, the movie should have been. It didn't do very well in the box office either, so the news must have spread. This movie was lacking. Lacking enough. (Reply to this) |

The Wake writes: on Dec 02 2005 09:58 PM In reply to this comment (#828388) As a huge starwars fan saying this comment should carry some weight when i say, this show is vastly superior to the prequels. I'm sure there are those who would disagree with me, however, judging by critical consensus of several critic collecting websites i would say you would be in the minority to think that this movie and the series was not at least thier equal. SO perhaps you can understand my frustration when something like this comes out and it gets dismissed offhandedly by the general public and something like the prequels with uninspired scipting/directing can inspire two sequels (II and III) and make lots of money while doing it. Although I wish it wern't so, when I see people complaining about the state of hollywood movies and the unoriginal crap that it seems to churn out more and more of each year and then turn right around and pay money to see something like "the island" i get the feeling we are reeping what we sow. ...damn sheep!!!...ok ok, im just kidding i don't wear a black trench coat and visit goth bars although my above statement sounds like it. brave.sir.rob writes: on Dec 03 2005 12:20 PM In reply to this comment (#828385) It didn't do well at the box office because the news *didn't* spread. If Universal had crammed marketing down our throats (ahem "Fantastic Four") it would have done much better. They took an experimental approach in letting Internet buzz attract audiences; it didn't work. That, and a September 30 release date, the ass end of the summer, doomed this movie's box office take. And anybody that can honestly say Episode III was better than Serenity has severe bias issues. NOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!! (Reply to this) |

DariusVIII writes: on Dec 04 2005 09:18 AM I thought Serenity was a very good mix of action sequeces, one-liners and decent special effects. If it would've had a bigger budget, it would've easily surpaced Episode III in quality of movie making. It had better writing, a better cast, and more interesting characters. I also thought it had more inovative cinematography. I'd be very interested in seeing a sequal. Also, from what I've heard, Firefly wasn't half bad. (Reply to this) |

IMAmoose24 writes: on Dec 04 2005 06:49 PM They Should Definatly wait till the DVD sales come in to see if they should make a sequel. Office Space made nothing in theaters and became a cult hit. The Matrix did not have the best box office sales and yet made a ton in the DVD department. They need to wait to make this decision. Serenity was one of my favorite movies of the year. Oh, and as a huge star wars fan, who thought that Episodes I and II were not worthy of the Star Wars Name, Episode III is my favorite movie of the year. Hands Down. (Reply to this) |

wakeofinsanity writes: on Dec 05 2005 04:15 AM Personally I enjoyed the series "Firefly" after borrowing the dvds from a buddy of mine. So I went to see Serenity... and really thought it was awesome. Not a perfect movie by any means, but great writing and performances really held it together... that is what Joss Whedon does: characters. They don't need a large budget or great special effects... just solid writing and acting. That's why Serenity stood out in a crowd of movies and that's why Fox sucks... because they bungle advertising (Arrested Development) or air shows in improper order (Firefly). So there ya'll go, my two cents. (Reply to this) |
