Searchlight & Linklater Meet Up for Some "Fast Food"
by Scott Weinberg | December 19, 2005

According to Variety, Eric Schlosser's non-fiction book "Fast Food Nation" will be turned into a movie by director Richard Linklater, a pretty impressive ensemble cast, and the fine folks at Fox Searchlight.

"Fox Searchlight has picked up domestic distrib rights for "Fast Food Nation," Richard Linklater's fictional telling of Eric Schlosser's nonfictional account of why you should never eat at McDonald's, Wendy's or Burger King ever again.

The ensemble cast includes Patricia Arquette, Bobby Cannavale, Luis Guzman, Ethan Hawke, Ashley Johnson, Greg Kinnear, Kris Kristofferson, Avril Lavigne, Esai Morales, Catalina Sandino Moreno, Lou Taylor Pucci, Ana Claudia Talancon and Wilmer Valderrama.

Though principal photography recently wrapped, little has been revealed of the fictional script Linklater and Schlosser penned. The 2001 bestselling tome was a muckraking account of the fast-food industry that some reviewers have compared to Upton Sinclair's 1906 meatpacking expose "The Jungle."

In a statement, Linklater said he approached Schlosser about a film when the author swung through Austin, Texas, on his book tour. "The idea that came out of our meetings was that the movie would not be a documentary but a character study of the lives behind the facts and figures," Linklater said. "I'm more interested in fiction than nonfiction. You get to the point through human storytelling."

Sometimes Linklater's films are damn good and other times they kinda suck. But I will have faith that along with Guzman, Hawke, Kinnear, Kristofferson, and Valderrama that this will be good. I can hardly wait for Linklater's A Scanner Darkly.

So if I got this straight linklater is making a ficitional verision of a non-fictional book wierd. The only movie like this I can remember is Woody Allen's brilliant "Everything You Always Wanted to Know about Sex but were Too Afraid to Ask"

In reply to this comment (#829011)
Martha Coolidge once directed a "fictional" version of the book "The Joy of Sex."

It was not ... a good movie.
