oh come on is anyone really saying that Broke-Back mountian is so good that snubbing it indicates bias everyones know critics as a whole are overwhelming liberal even critics from Utah, the most conservative state in America, voted Broke-back Mountian as their best picture. Oh another thing is this the first supporting-actor award serkis has won for a cgi character?

The love scenes in Brokeback Mountain were disturbing? What about the relationship between Niomi Watts and a giant ape? I'd say that's a little more disturbing - especially since Watts actually falls in love with King Kong.

This also proves that Watts is a total size queen.

Well, perhaps that first sex scene is SUPPOSED to be a little disturbing. Both characters are new at it, kinda embarrassed, and more than a little confused.

But if the very concept of two men together is disturbing to you, then yeah, you should skip a trip to the Mountain.

I think they're both damn fine films. Apples & oranges, tho. I wouldn't even compare 'em.

That's a pretty ridiculous statement - there is a San Diego Republican film critic cabal that is virulently anti-gay so they are going to shaft Brokeback for most of their major awards in favor of the oh so heterosexual 'Capote'? Maybe they are in league with the extremely conservative Toronto...

Now, i'm goin to preface this by saying that i haven't seen brokeback mountain. But just because movie is strongly centered around sexuality does not make it a good movie. The Bridges of Madison County, for example, while very well acted, is not a great movie, dispite reviewers love of it. Other movies such as closer aren't all that good either. So, i would be remise in chastizing some film critics organization about not putting it on the top of their list.

Strongly agreed the classic example that comes to mind is the graduate. However I'm not sure from the trailers and what I've heard if this is really so much a movie about sexuality(i.e philedalephia) or simply a love story that happens to have two men at the center. I guess the question would be could this film have been made exactly the same or very close to it if Heath and Jake were a heterosexual couple?
The point I made early that I'd like to come back to is this: who said this movie was so good that it absolutely had to win major academy awards such as best picture or best director? Personally I remember a lot more critics siting Sideways as being the best pic of the year but there was no talk on oscar night about how the oscars were snubbing independent films last year. Hmmm...could sexuality be a bigger issue when giving out awards in some peoples mind than critical acclaim?

I said it before and I say it again: king kong is the best movie of the year

not by far, but is the best, followed by a history of violence and brokeback

I would really like to see naomi getting nominated, but the nom for serkis is a little too much, he was better as gollum (more of his acting got to the screen), maybe he should get an special award as a pioneer or something

and if he is nominated for acting it, should be in the leading category

I'm not an american, so for me is hard to understand how could there be people out there angry or disturbed by the idea of a gay couple or gay sex, so I don't see how that should affect the movie's chances in the oscar race, but if it does it would be very stupid, I mean, nobody was offended by sin city, with all the extreme violence, so how could two gay cowboys offend anyone

but then again, there's a lot about the united states that I don't understand

I didn't think King Kong was great. I give it a C+. The island scenes are great, but I find the first hour incredibly boring and the New York scenes not as thrilling as they were made out to be.

I love that Utah critics chose Brokeback Mountain. As a citizen of Provo, Utah, I'm greatly pleased!

Yes, many people here have problems with sexual issues, such as homosexuality. But dont' think that there aren't people who have a problem with the extreme violence such as in Sin City either. But keep in mind, no one is talking about giving Sin City any awards for best picture either, which of coarse is the context of this conversation. I would say though that there is no outrage over BrokeBack that i have heard of. its not like its " the last temptation of christ '. there are people who won't go see it becuase of its nature. but there isn't any public displays of anger that i have heard of.
