"Highlander" Helmer to Tackle Third "Resident" Entry

Aussie filmmaker Russell Mulcahy, best known for directing the cult classic "Highlander" and its widely detested sequel, has been tapped to direct "Resident Evil: Extinction" for producer Paul W.S. Anderson and leading lady Milla Jovovich.

Says Variety: Coming soon is "the third installment in the "Resident Evil" franchise, titled "Resident Evil: Extinction," which is set to begin production in 2006. Russell Mulcahy will direct with Milla Jovovich reprising her starring role."

In addition to the first two "Highlander" flicks, genre fans know Mr. Mulcahy for 1984's "Razorback," 1991's "Ricochet," 1994's "The Shadow" ... and not a whole lot else that's all that worthy of note.

One of Russell Mulcahy's best efforts is a "Seven" ripoff called "Resurrection" (1999) starring Christopher Lambert that went direct to video and DVD.

No, no... NO.
The first film was not sequel-worthy. What makes people think the second one was? Having Paul W.S. Anderson's name attached to a project is pretty much the kiss of death right then and there.

Howsabout they make a movie that's actually about Resident Evil next time? With a house, and cops vs. zombies and stuff...

HellHole.. you are completely right... I hated how much they didn't keep the story similar to the original film.. Would of been a tad bit better, but then Paul Anderson would of made it somehow worse.

If they keep this movie to a STRICT cast line and kill Milla off in the first 5 minutes, this movie can go far.

I now have higher hopes for the resident evil series. Russells career resurrection has been a long time coming. This guy was a pioneer in many ways and I hope the best for him.

I just felt like doing that.

Razorback was great. I'm glad to hear he's involved with this one. It's also nice to see the super fans getting whipped into a frenzy because the move based on their favorite video game isnt exaclty like the game itself. I love the Resident Evil video games and the first film in that series is one of the few films based on a video game that wasn't half bad.
