Clooney Claims His Batman Was Gay; Barbara Walters Interviews Other People
by Jen Yamato | March 01, 2006
Discuss Article
According to the New York Daily News, George Clooney tells Barbara Walters tonight that his 1997 film "Batman & Robin" was more like "BrokeBat Mountain..."

From the Daily Dish:

"George Clooney outs Batman on Barbara Walters' Oscar special tonight. Asked if he'd ever play a gay role, Clooney says he already did — as Batman. "Think about it," he explains. "I was in a rubber suit. I had rubber nipples. I could have played him straight but I didn't. I made him gay." Well, that puts Bruce Wayne's "ward" Robin in a new light …"

It all makes sense now...catch the interview yourself tonight. Walters' annual Oscar special airs tonight on ABC and includes one-on-ones with Clooney (on his cinematic politics), Patrick Dempsey (on his dyslexia), Matthew McConaughey (on being sexy, and his romance with Penelope Cruz), and Mariah Carey (on her childhood, her break down, and her comeback).

Good god. I thought I'd repressed all that was truly horrible about that movie... but merely seeing that picture alone makes me appreciate Batman Begins even more. The series had truly gone down the tubes before Nolan revitalized it.

Schumacher's big "Statement"
So Schumacher claimed when B&R was coming out (no pun intended) that the film would contain major gay statements. Apart from the batsuits themselves...

Is it a big statement if no one outside the gay community catches it? Apparently the exchange, "Partners?" "Partners!" was supposed to be heavily laced with innuendo. I think anyone with brains fully interpreted it as Batman inviting the others to be partners in fighting crime, not partners in caressing each other's rubber suit.

Sheesh.

Its hard to take that Barbara Walters "Oscar Special" seriously if only one of the interviewees is directly related to the Academy Awards.

Schulmacher and his suckness
Schulmacher definitly destroyed the Batman Franchise with his overly cartoonish view of the genre. I knew it was over in the FIRST scene of Batman Forever when there was spiraling multi-colored images projected on the surface of the building where Two Face was commiting his crime. If you look for it you can see moving projected colored cut out Gels on pretty much every background in that movie. I assume he did it to give the movie the feel of a cartoon brought to life but all it did was cheapen and distract. It was obviously a left over from Schulmakers days as a WINDOW DRESSER.
I do however have to give Schulmaker some credit. I think he does his best work when he is working on the darker side of humanity.
For every BATMAN movie he has made (and screwed up) he has made a movie that is actually quite good IMHO.
Ex: Falling down - one of the few movies with Michael Douglas that I can actually watch. Its brutal, unflinching and gritty.
8mm - another foray into the dark side of humanity. Again, very brutal and it dealt with a subject matter not commonly seen in hollywood films.
Tigerland - another one of his decent films but unfortunatly it brought into the world the career of Colin Farrell (one of those, I act the same in every movie I make actors).
Flawless - not a great movie but it gave us a great performance from Philip S. Hoffman. I don't neccesarily credit Schulmaker for getting the performance out of him because PSH is good in most everything he does, but still, solid film.

Now there is a LONG list of Schulmaker movies that make me want to vomit and wonder why/how they even got made.
Ex: Batman Forever, Batman and Robin, Flatliners (starring the most annoying movie star of all time, Julia Roberts....I shiver at the mention of her name), Dying Young (ditto), Cousins (any movie with Ted Danson is bad news (except, saving Private Ryan and Creepshow), Phantom of the opera (did we really need a movie of the play of the movie? WHY?).

Soapbox, me stepping off it.

When I saw B&H the first (and last) time, I couldn't help but wonder where Adam West was? What ever happened to the Bat-tu-tzi, Joel?

So what if I liked "Batman & Robin"? A lot of people I know did.

Tudarius, just because I liked a movie that you didn't doesn't mean I'm gay. Please release me from your fantasies. People can make anything sound like something else, in this case to sound like it's gay. I watched it as a "Batman" movie, not a gay men movie.

What's so bad about Mariah Carey? Sure, she's a little different sometimes, but what's wrong with different?

well isn't kind of obvious that Joel Schumacher is gay himself? have you seen him walk and talk? it he ain't gay, then my Gaydar is on the fritz every time i watch the second discs of Batman Forever and Batman & Robin (i bought the Batman Anthology for Christmas).

that's not to say that a gay actor or gay director isn't capable of doing very "un-gay" work. look at Ian McKellan. the man's played Gandalf and Magneto, and it's pretty obvious he's gay. Alan Cumming? he played Nightcrawler and it's fairly obvious he's gay too. Nathan Lane? sure, he's gay and he played a gay guy in The Birdcage, but look at his work in The Producers. i can go on. it's one thing to be a gay artist, it's a whole different thing when your "gayness" affects your work like it did with Schumacher's Batman movies.

and yes, thank God (and Nolan) for Batman Begins.
