"Not Screened For Press" Trend Growing in 2006
by Jen Yamato | April 04, 2006
Discuss Article
AP writer and film critic David Germain calls attention to the disturbing (at least, to us at Rotten Tomatoes) trend among studios to withhold films from the media in order to avoid negative reviews and make more money on opening day.

In his article, Germain points out that the number of movies not screened for press is way up -- eleven so far this year, compared to only two this time last year -- including this week's comedies "The Benchwarmers" and "Phat Girlz."

Anyone who reads our own Tim Ryan's weekly Critical Consensus has probably noticed the phrase "not screened for critics" popping up nearly every week, leading to a dearth of preview reviews that has spawned our ever-popular "Guess The Tomatometer" game. And though this game is delicious fun, it is a shame that more and more critics are being robbed of press screenings -- which means that the moviegoing public doesn't have that critical barometer to guide them in their film selection.

Not surprisingly, Germain couldn't get a response from many studio heads on the issue, but did talk to film critics extraordinaire Roger Ebert and Richard Roeper, who added a "wagging finger of shame" to their "thumbs up, thumbs down" signature ratings but eventually got tired of it from overuse. They argue that negative reviews rarely have adverse effects on box office numbers for the types of movies typically not screened for critics -- broad comedies and horror flicks -- and actually generate more buzz for a movie.

To read more of Germain's article, click here.

"The Benchwarmers": How could they not screen this??

"Phat Girlz": Who wouldn't sneak a taste of this guacamole?

So now that we know "The Benchwarmers" and "Phat Girlz" won't be screened for critics, may the "Guess The Tomatometers" commence!

With no original ideas coming out of Hollywood, the endless goddamn remakes of old films, old tv series, and East Asian Horror films and other films, the sequels(some films need a sequel), the decline in Box Office monies and attendance last year, a trend that shows is steadily dropping, is anyone surprised? This is just a way of stopping the negative press for the film. Make some original films dammit...

horrible news
it is hard enough trying to get reviews up for my site when the flick only screens 24 hours before its release.......this is a bad sign for the movie industry.

Well, it's not his job to makes movies now is it? No, it isn't, and therefore he has the right to complain about the crappy films that the studios and movie making people crap out. And you shouldn't be talking about sounding like a bitter old lady, mr. whiteyboyprince aka can't spell "ass". How about you learn to spell and shut the hell up?

Yes, this IS a disturbing trend, but honestly, anyone who goes to see one of these witheld flicks should know not to expect much.

Conversely, I think a lot of reviews nowadays are overrated anyway. How many reviews are actually HELPFUL anymore? More and more "critics" are using their reviews as mere platforms for either A) making themselves look important, B) fanboy gushing and pandering, or C) simply bitching out of pure spite because of some personal bias. Sure, reviews are there to guide us (and NOT be a platform for shameless self-promotion and self-aggrandization), but not to make our decisions for us! The responsibility for what we see should no doubt fall on moviegoers to practice more common sense.

And to whiteboyprince:

Don't hate the playa, hate the game.

I wouldn't buy the argument that piracy is killing Hollywood numbers after seeing this trend...

No Review = Really. Bad. Movie. Simple as that, it's one of those universal laws that you can set your watch to.

Whiteyboyprince - why would you hang out at a movie site and then get crazy when someone makes a comment regarding....drum roll.....MOVIES?

Well my problem is with all of the complaining. I am a movie fan. That is why I come here. The movies are no worse than previous years. People are just more prone to complain now. I hope I answered your question.

All you are doing is complaining about people complaining. Why don't you make a counter argument to the ORIGINAL complaint, which, by the way, I agree with wholeheartidly.

And if you want anyone to respect you in the least, spouting 5th grade playground curse-laden "insults" and "your momma" jokes isn't the way to go about it.

There has only been one movie this year that didn't get the recognition it deserved, Underworld: Evolution. Granted, it was not the best ever made, but it was still decent. But ya, there are far TOO many bad movies coming out now, and it's that fact which is hurting Hollywood.

It's a shame that good movies like Serenity, Shaun of the Dead, Donnie Darko, and Slither get passed over so frequently, and bad movies do so well (Mr and Mrs Smith, Date Movie, Scary Movie, "Horror Movie 'X'" for example).

I have become so annoyed with Hollywood, I aim to show them that independent filmmakers such as myself can make better movies than them, with actors from the local drama and film groups and universities, along with an extremely small budget.

Independent movies are FAR better than the majority of main stream drek, it puts Hollywood studios to shame.

Man, why aren't they screening "The Benchwarmers"? That looks like one of the better movies to come out. It's like "Underworld: Evolution", it's probably going to be one of the movies that aren't going to get the recognition it desrves. The scene where Jon Heder catches the potato and screams - priceless. I know it's an Adam Sandler movie, but hey, I'm a sucker for his films, and I'm sure everyone else is.

For "Phat Girlz", it's another in the line of bad urban movies. And I can stomach a good amount of Mo'Nique (::cough:: "Soul Plane")

Benchwarmers!!
I think they are just being cautious about this one becuase they want it to do well. Critics usually don't enjoy this type of movie and it is guaranteed that most will bash it!! Damn critics!! I personally think it will be an enjoyable film and it is good to see David Spade back in a movie!! Go Benchwarmers!!!!

Years ago
Up until about 10 years ago, there were a lot more movies not shown to critics before opening day. Horror films, violent action films, teen comedies and exploitation movies in general were seldom screened for critics before opening day, and nobody expected them to be. In fact, in recent years, some movies have been so unrelentingly awful that I was surprised studios had the nerve to show them to anyone before opening day. From about the time "The Avengers" opened without any advance screenings to much publicity in 1998, not screening a movie for critics seemed to be a stigma the studios tried to avoid. Lately, though, they've gone back more to the philosophy they had years ago that screening an obvious piece of crap and getting bad opening-day reviews can only hurt. I think one of the reasons this is happening now is that you have so many good internet critics out there who don't pull any punches. They're not catered to by the studios like critics from newspapers and magazines, and feel more free to tell it like it is.

I'm with you. I think the trailer is HYSTERICAL/ "Makers of what? Poop" "Ama-za-zing" "RELEASE!" all memorable funny lines and that's just the trailer. Most of my friend's want to see it. A couple refuse, but I'm soooo there.
