"Sgt. Rock" Nabs a Screenwriter
by Scott Weinberg | April 19, 2006

The Hollywood Reporter indicates that WB has hired screenwriter John Cox to pen their big-screen version of "Sgt. Rock," a long-gestating project based on a classic comic book series.

Says THR: "John Cox has been hired to write "Sgt. Rock," an adaptation of DC Comics' World War II adventure series being produced by Joel Silver for Warner Bros. Pictures.

Sgt. Frank Rock was the leader of his infantry unit, Easy Company. He first appeared in a 1959 issue of "Our Army at War." In 1977, with the character's steadily rising popularity, the comic was renamed "Sgt. Rock" and ran until 1988. The property has long been in development at Warners, with such scribes as Brian Helgeland, John Milius, David Peoples, Jeffrey Boam and Steven De Souza having tackled the adaptation."

I remember Ahnold being cast in this movie about 14 times.

Sgt. Rock is finally going to become a movie? This is great news! Unfortunately, Arnold's day has passed to play Rock. Now I can't see anyone but Van Diesel in the role, especially after his performance in Saving Private Ryan; he even has the look. This announcement will no doubt get Stan Lee's "Sgt. Nick Fury and his Howling Commandos" to the screen. That would make for a couple of dueling movie franchises, although I think Sgt Rock will come out on top mainly because Rock is a fighting machine while Fury is more of a thinker.

The Rock! Arnie can't do it anymore and The Rock is clearly a better actor than Arnie anyway. Good news. I hope they cast this well!!

THE ROCK!!! THE ROCK!!! THE ROCK!!!

The ONLY Sgt. Rock: Bruce Willis
I don't think Vin Diesel or The Rock (ironically) are good calls for the Rock role (though not terrible); Rock wasn't the biggest guy in Easy. They'd be great for Bulldozer and Jackie Johnson, respectively.

Bruce Willis is the obvious best choice in my opinion; physically and personality-wise, he's a dead ringer for Frank Rock, and he'd NAIL every single one-liner.

And of course Ed Harris as the Iron Major.
