Tom Hanks Explains His "Da Vinci Code" Hairdo
by Scott Weinberg | April 25, 2006
Discuss Article
One of the first things I thought while watching the first "Da Vinci Code" trailer was ... what's up with Tom Hanks' wacky hair? It doesn't look bad, exactly, but it's sure not the white-boy-afro we're all used to. So here, for everyone who simply has to know, is the straight scoop from Hanks himself ... on what's up with the hair.

From Contact Music: "TOM HANKS toyed with wearing a wig for his new role as THE DA VINCI CODE hero ROBERT LANGDON, because he feared he wouldn't be able to grow his hair long enough to look like a scholar. The Oscar winner created a mental picture of the character and became obsessed with having the right hairstyle - he even worked with a stylist to come up with the perfect look. He explains, "(I wanted it) fuller in the back and falling down across my forehead. But the truth is my hair cannot be long and flowing; genetically, it doesn't do that. It's a bush. "We talked about a wig, but that ends up taking a huge amount of time. "So I went to these guys who know about hair chemistry and found a way."

Whew, now we can all sleep at night!

Anything to hype the film.

There isn't enough hype? I have been sick to death of hearing about it ever since it was announced. The supposed "controversy" is ridiculous -- anyone who doesn't understand that the novel is fiction, has more issues than there is room to discuss here. As for the Church, they have been condemning works of art for centuries, so why is anyone surprised that they are doing so now? I can't wait until "X-Men III" opens, so we can hear about a different movie, for a change.

Oh, I imagine that if someone wrote a book/made a movie contorting something you held very dear to your heart that you might be a little more sympathetic to people who don't like their Savior being misrepresented. Even in a work of fiction. Besides, there would be quite an uproar if this movie was misrepresenting Muhammad instead of Christ. I'd hate to think how certain people might react to a movie about him.

I'm still waiting for Donald Trump to explain his hair-do. Now that would be news.

I wouldn't care either way. Fiction is fiction and freedom of speech is gauranteed by the First Amendment. We are a democracy, not a theocracy. Art and ideas never hurt anyone. Zealots and fanatics end up causing much more grief and suffereing than any novelist ever could. If you find a work of art offensive, don't look at it. Change the channel. Go to a different movie. Read a different book. But don't close your mind.
