Abrams (kinda) Clarifies His "Star Trek" Position

Arriving quickly on the heels of the news that J.J. Abrams would be directing a 10th sequel to "Star Trek" is a clarification (of sorts) from the director himself: He's not (yet) signed to direct, but he is attached to the project in some very important (yet vague) capacity.

From Empire Online: "The whole thing was reported entirely without our cooperation," says the director with a hint of regret. "People learned that I was producing a Star Trek film, that I had an option to direct it, they hear rumours of what the thing was going to be and ran with a story that is not entirely accurate ... We've made a pact not to discuss any specifics."

Call me nuts, but Variety is generally pretty reliable on these types of scoops, so I guess we'll just have to wait and see what happens.

Spock out.

"News that it would adopt the long-mooted concept of Kirk and Spock's youthful adventures at Starfleet Academy provoked a more mixed reaction. Those who thought such a move sacrilege can rest easy though because, as Empire discovered in an interview today with Abrams himself, the story is nothing of the sort."

I hope that the acadamy plot is not true, but I would love to see another film...especially one to give a respectful ending to TNG

Well that's a relief of sorts, how that Kirk and Spock thing got started we'll never know but it was a horrible idea, and really would have dug the franchise in a deeper hole. So basically we are back to where we were with nothing but rumors and wishes, he's not even signed on to direct a Trek film yet, someone really jumped the gun on that story.

Actors have been picked
I read on another fan site that the actors for the new Star Trek movie have been picked. The story revolves around a young James T. Kirk as he enlists in newly formed Star Fleet. While at the academy he meets a young science officer named Spock. Spock ends up on Jim's first space mission. And the adventure begins. The actors have been set -- Matt Damon as a young Kirk and Ben Affleck as a young Spock. Sounds crazy and it also sounds awesome at the same time. Ahead Warp factor 10!
