WB Sees a Live-Action "Jetsons" In Their Future
by Scott Weinberg | May 03, 2006
Blog Article | Discuss Article
Summary

Warner Bros. has assigned producer Denise Di Novi and screenwriter Adam F. Goldberg to turn the classic Hanna-Barbera cartoon "The Jetsons" into a live-action movie, not at all unlike the way Universal did with "The Flintstones" ... twice ... and poorly. Back to Article

Even while I watched the cartoons when I was young, I always thought Sprocket looked like Danny DeVito.

What? The live action version of The Flintstones wasn't bad enough?

applegate is a little old to play the daughter...maybe if this were back in the 90's.

sadly...they will probably cast someone like hillary duff as judy.

Actually Steve Martin doesnt really look like George Jetson. When I first heard about this movie a year or so ago I pictured Jim Carrey as George Jetson.

Hilary Duff makes a bad Judy! Anyway, I think you people are having fun with casting people. Hmmm...it would be interesting to see Jim Carrey as George Jetson. Steve Martin shouldn't play George because he's always playing those father roles. >_>

I agree with you on George...Steve Martin (someone else posted William H. Macy - not bad, either)

For Jane I would cast Annie Potts (Ghostbusters, Designing Women) or Catherine Zeta-Jones

Judy - Reese Witherspoon (Applegate'll do it if Reese won't!)

Elroy - the kid from Jerry Maguire (yes, I know he's older now)

Rosie - Rosie O'Donnell (either as voice of Rosie or in a costume of sorts)

I agree with you on Mr. Spacely - Danny DeVito

Spacely's wife - Delta Burke

Cogswell - Peter Boyle (Raymond's dad, Young Frankenstein)

Astro - CGI

The building handyman - Richard Karn (Al from Home Improvement)

Jetsons Cast should be......
George - Tim Allen, hands down! Fits the profile to a T and he needs to be in a movie that might resurrect his career.
Jane - Nicole Kidman. She could pull it off I think.
Judy - Lindsay Lohan is the obvious choice.
Elroy - I would say Rory Culkin but I'm sure he's too old.
Astro - could be voiced by Dave Coulier
Mr. Spacely - Definitely Danny Devito. Oh and just for the record....he should have been Boss Hogg in "Dukes of Hazzard!"

George -- Tim Allen or Steve Martin

Judy -- Kristen Bell
Elroy -- Angus T. Jones (2 1/2 Men)

First, it MUST have GREAT script (remember the live-action Flinstones?). Second, it should stay bright, light-hearted and fun as in the cartoon series withn no "Blade Runner" hard reality. Third, it should stick with the 1960's vision of the 21st century using CGI to duplicate, as closely as possible, the environment we know and love so well. Even down to George's bubble-top flying car that folds up into a briefcase. At 47, I grew up with this series on Saturday morning TV and do believe this can be pulled off if the screenwriters put enough thought into the project.

Cast:

George Jetson: Jim Carrey. Take his performance style in "The Mask", add the futuistic clothing and he's dead-on George. Only Carrey has the comic mastery and rubber-like reflexes and energy to fill the part.

Jane Jetson: Nicole Kidman. Has the demure grace of Jane's charachter naturally and would no doubt enjoy a role very different from her previous works.

Judy Jetson: I have no idea. I'm 47 and have lost touch with teen idols. Especially female teen idols.

Elroy Jetson: Same as Judy. I might have said Haley Joel Osment but I've heard he's shaving now.

Astro the CGI dog: The voice of Don Pardo (of Saturday Night Live fame).

Cosmo G. Spacely: We all know who. Danny DeVito. I can hear him already... JETSON!!!

H. G. Cogswell: William H. Macy. A terrific actor who could bring out the devious side of Cogswell quite nicely.

Rosie the robot maid: The voice of Rosie O'Donnell.

Henry Orbit, superintendent of the Sky Pad Apartments: No clue. Suggestions?

Uniblab: The voice of Dave Foley (Kids in the Hall, A Bug's Life, Blast From the Past).

I actually think it could be great if done properly. I just hope they don't make it too much of a literal interpretation as they did with "Flintstones". I wouldn't have had it any other way than having John Goodman as Fred, however. Similarly, I think that the only person who can play Spacely is Danny DeVito. I can see Kevin Spacey as George Jetson, but Steve Martin or even Jim Carrey could be really good, too. I could see either Ellen DeGeneres or Rosie O'Donnell at least providing a voice for Rosie the robot maid (the latter could also give it an interesting connection to the Flintstones, and also, let's face it, O'Donnell does kind of sound like the cartoon version's voice). Let's see what they can do- I know that there are many poorly made adaptions of classics, especially cartoons, but maybe it won't be a disaster (crossing fingers).
