Warcraft: The Movie
by Scott Weinberg | May 09, 2006
Discuss Article
Big fan of the "Warcraft" game series? Well, it seems like millions of folks are, and pretty soon they'll have a big-screen adaptation to love and/or hate. Either way, it's a title they'll be talking about for the next few years.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, "Blizzard Entertainment Inc. and Legendary Pictures are suiting up for war. The companies are teaming to produce a live-action film based on Blizzard's award-winning "Warcraft" video games, with Legendary acquiring movie rights to the "Warcraft" universe. The "Warcraft" games debuted in 1994, and the franchise now has four titles in release. "Warcraft II: Tides of Darkness" (1995) won multiple game of the year awards, while "Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos" (2002) broke sales records. The latest game, "World of Warcraft," is one of the most popular multiplayer online role-playing games, with a reported subscription base of more than 6 million. The movie would not follow one of the games but rather be set in the epic fantasy universe, which includes orcs, trolls, elves and the undead."

I looooved the first two Warcraft games, but I refuse to buy "Worlds" because I just know it'll take over my entire life.

Sooo...

...is this going to be like Lord of the Rings or more like Van Helsing? I can really see this going either way, and that kinda scares me. (Okay, LoTR is kinda pushing it).

The Warcraft franchise is renkown for innovation as well as being umcomparable. To try and even put previously made movies up for comparison with anything Warcraft would grossly underestimate and injustice the franchise. However: Since Blizzard isn't dirrectly producing the film, it could flop.

Warcraft has always been cartoony fantasy, why would they not keep the theme that has worked for them. I picture the movie more of a CGI made movie as opposed to having actual actors.

At this point: Who the hell knows.

Remember how excited we all were when that beautifully rendered Warcraft 3 preview came out? And remember how we all gave out a collective "What the #%@$ is this $hit?!?!?" when we actually saw the gameplay?

Yeah.

movies in the game
the movies in the game are dark and are serious looking. I'm talking about the cinematics for each race and their endings, not the in-game short scenes. If it's similar to the well made cinematics with or without real actors, the movie could be kickass!

This could be good... but would have to have a hard "R" which they may balk on, which will hose the whole thing.

I really dout they will keep the feel of the game going. I wish they would, but I really deep down know they wont. Its going to suck so bad. Im just going to go cry now.

...

Ok hold it together. Their is hope. After all, when I first heard about the LOTR movie I was sure they were going to crap that out, and make some sad summer pop corn flick. Hope my friends, hope.

The best thing they could do is just let blizzard do it. A really long version of one of the cut sceens. But that will never happen.

What the hell is wrong with the gameplay? It's great. And did you really think a game's actual gameplay back in 2001 would look ANYTHING like a cutscene? Begone.

No, no, no....The movie they have to make is Diablo... Diablo has a story that could easily be adapted to the big screen. The casting would be even easier : Jessica biel should be the Amazon, The Rock should be the Barbarian, Jeremy Iron could be the Necromancer, and anybody could be the Paladin and the Sorceress...It could even be a trilogy with the killing of Mephisto, Diablo, and then Baal...

"Like a cut scene"...? No, of course not. But I WAS expecting something besides what looked like outtakes from "Day Of The Tentacle."

Hey, let's all just hope a Wayans brother doesn't appear in this.

So I'm wrong that it might not be great, but also wrong that it could equally be good? In other words: Who the hell knows? Not that I truly care I'm just curious what you disagree about.

...and I meant LoTR as a comparison of movie quality, not exact frickin' copy. Ditto with Van Helsing, though I kinda assumed both would be obvious.

There are gonna be some dorks dressing up on opening night though. Should make for a funny spectacle.

I always wanted a Starcraft movie!

Just imagine the Zerg invading the earth massive amounts of zerglings and hives and brood mothers landing on earth and Kerrigan turning to the zerg side like in the game. And just when all hope is lost the Protoss decend onto earth to save the day with massive amounts of Carriers battling the Zerg, Tanks firing everywhere and battle cruisers flying! NOW THATS A MOVIE!!!

If anyone has ever played the original warcraft games, not world of warcraft, theres a pretty good story on a lotr typer scale. So the warcraft movie could be very well the next "lotr" of they make it right. and it wouldnt have to be rated R either.
