Trailer Bulletin: Peaceful Warrior
by Scott Weinberg | May 26, 2006
Discuss Article
From director Victor Salva ("Jeepers Creepers") comes the inspirational sports drama "Peaceful Warrior," which is based on the "semi-autobiographical" novel by Dan Millman, who, apparently, overcame a broken neck to return to the world of gymnastics he loves so much. (I got all that from this trailer.)

"Arrogant, talented Dan Millman seems to have the perfect college life and a shot at the Olympic qualifiers in men's gymnastics. Still, Dan wakes up almost nightly from terrifying nightmares and odd visions he can't explain or dismiss. One night, Dan goes for a run and comes upon a well-lit service station. Behind the counter, an old man seemingly moves without regard for space or time. Dan begs the old man, whom he names Socrates, to share the secret of his abilities in order to achieve his goal of Olympic Gold. Thus begins a journey of discovery for Dan that will shatter every preconceived notion he has about academics, athletics, and achievement. Guided by Socrates, Dan will consider a whole new ideology--one that values consciousness over intelligence, strength in spirit over strength in body. "

Starring Scott Mechlowicz, Nick Nolte, and Amy Smart, "Peaceful Warrior" hits theaters (in limited release) on June 2nd.

This film looks very, very good.

The book was more of a thinly-veiled philosophy text . . . ripe with subtantial problems: underdeveloped characters, sub-par writing, lack of drama, and a plot structure that needed some serious tweaking.

However, as flawed as it's execution was, the book had smart ideas. Those points really connected with people, including myself.

I'm hoping the film can solve the structural and dramatic issues(as it seems like it does, according to the trailer), while keeping the stronger philosophical points intact.

I'm really looking forward to this.

btw . . . I think Dan Millman suffered from a broken leg(thighbone if I remember correctly)
