Scott's Final Cut of "Blade Runner" is Coming!
After years of anticipation, the fans of Ridley Scott's "Blade Runner" will soon be able to experience the director's "intended cut," which promises to be different from the theatrical cut, the international cut, and the previous director's cut. It's all very confusing, but this particular flick is worth the trouble.
Variety irons it out nicely: "Warner's rights to "Blade Runner" lapsed a year ago, but the studio has since negotiated a long-term license. The pic, now considered a sci-fi classic, has had a troubled history from the start: When Scott ran overbudget, completion bond guarantors took control of it and made substantial changes before its 1982 theatrical release, adding a voiceover and happy ending. That version was replaced by the much better-received director's cut in 1992, but Scott has long been unhappy with it, complaining that he was rushed and unable to give it proper attention.
The restored "Director's Cut" will debut on homevid in September, and remain on sale for four months only, after which time it will be placed on moratorium. "Blade Runner: Final Cut" will arrive in 2007 for a limited 25th anniversary theatrical run, followed by a special edition DVD with the three previous versions offered as alternate viewing: Besides the original theatrical version and director's cut, the expanded international theatrical cut will be included. The set will also contain additional bonus materials."
That's a lotta Blade Running.

Fangmeier69 writes: on May 26 2006 09:26 AM Hmm.... The voiceover can't return. Scott always said that was unneccessary, along with the happy ending. I have longed for a special DVD version for a long time, but what other cuts and additions are neccessary? Scott gotten cut happy lately, with Alien and now a longer version of Kingdom Of Heaven. He's getting to be like Michael Mann, unable to make up his mind what finished film he wants. (Reply to this) |

theVictorian writes: on May 26 2006 10:36 AM In reply to this comment (#836770) From what I understand, some special effects will be neatened up (Spinner cables, Zhora's obvious double) some sound-synch issues and some scenes will be recut to work better with the absence of a voiceover. The unicorn reverie will be slightly reworked, I think there might be some additional footage. (Reply to this) |

nogard64 writes: on May 26 2006 01:29 PM In reply to this comment (#836773) couldn't disagree more! The movie was misunderstoodd and probably still is because it is way ahead of its time. Such the wierd mix of cultures and languages in the movie, which seemed so odd at the time, but have you been to LA or Cali lately? LA looks like a whole other country now! And they don't even Speak English there now! The movie is about exsistence, memories, what is real and what is not, was it a dream or did it happen. The slow sleepy pacing is to create this dreamscape atmosphere. Best Sci Fi movie ever! (Reply to this) |

SammyJenkis writes: on May 26 2006 03:37 PM The original release was more graphic than the special edition director's cut. There was additional footage in the murders. When Roy Batty crushed Tyrell's head, there was blood gushing out of his eyes. It took Deckard THREE shots to dispatch Pris. And we got to actually see the nail thrusted into Roy's hand. I hope these scenes make it into the new cut. Although not necessary to the story, it made the movie more passionate. These scenes were gruesome but full of (murderous) feelings, something the replicants were in search of. On a different note, I had the same problem with Scott's Legend and the scene with Meg, but that movie was such a mess (in a good way) that it didn't really matter. *my first post!! (Reply to this) |

FILMCZY writes: on May 26 2006 10:35 PM Yes, awake now...25th Anniversary, huh? Well, according to Hollywood that can only mean one thing: REMAKE! Let's see Ben Affleck? Ashton? Ice Cube? Jessica would make an awesome replicant...there's method acting for ya... And as a final note, it is nice to actual see a director who ISN'T ashamed of the different versions of his film and is willing to give fans what they want... Hey, FILMCZY, are you aware of the irony of your comment about paging Mr Lucas? In case you aren't, Harrison For'd first line in movies was "Paging Mr Ellis" (Reply to this) |

La_Rochelle writes: on May 28 2006 10:38 AM Already made my own! I thought the darn thing was in limbo, so I carefully made my own edit. Some good transitions, better flow. . .Now how can I get them to conform to my version before September? To read details, I've posted them in discussions on imdb for Blade Runner, Ridley, and his editor. I guess I'm happy, but. . . I don't know. The original and 1992 versions have always been made of good scenes with fat in between and a bit out of order. I hope the final is indeed an improvement and not just more unicorn footage.
