"A Scanner Darkly" producer Tommy Pallotta has a blog on the IGN FilmForce site. Pallotta, who also produced "Waking Life," has been instrumental in the use of the digital rotoscope style of those Richard Linklater-produced films.
"A Scanner Darkly," which hits theaters July 7, stars Keanu Reeves, Winona Ryder, Robert Downey Jr., and Woody Harrelson. Based upon a Philip K. Dick novel, the film takes place in the near future, where paranoia reigns and people spy on their friends with startling frequency. on Jun 03 2006 01:31 AM [b]???[/b] Why couldn't they have just used the actors as they are instead of animating over them to make ANIMATION look realistic. Waking Life was ok but I saw no point in it unless the actors are fully CGI (IMO). I understand the artistic experiment that's being pioneered but I have to wonder why bother. Especially since this things been threatening to come out for ages, I guess it would have been finished way earlier if it was a normal live action movie with great special effects. Do you think maybe it's also because they had an opportunity to make Keanu emote. Lets hope an animated KR has a wider acting range. :) (Reply to this) |

Dick’s 1977 novel, in which the director expands on the rotoscope technique. Keanu Reeves, Robert Downey Jr., Woody Harrelson, Winona Ryder, and more act out a dreamlike story set in a future world of anonymous cops wearing identity-hiding “scramble suits” who can “scan” the homes of justifiably paranoid drug addicts. It would have been almost impossible to do justice to the scamble suits just using live action (my comment) The animation is so detailed—especially in Keanu Reeves’s close-ups—that it captures every nuance of the performances. There is not really a category to fit what we did here. There’s this extra layer of interpretation, but it’s the actors. And I’m afraid they won’t get the credit they deserve for their performances. Keanu is already getting slammed and you haven't seen it yet.It sounds as though it will do justice to the book and thats all i am interested in..(my comment) (Reply to this) |
