Critical Consensus: A Smooth-Running "Cars," An Ill "Omen"
by RT Staff | June 08, 2006
Blog Article | Discuss Article
This week at the movies, we've got anthropomorphic automobiles not named KITT ("Cars") and a mean little devil named Damien ("The Omen"). Will the critics go along for the ride? Will they give the devil his due?

"Cars," Pixar's latest feature, is the worst reviewed film in the studio's history, but it's still Certified Fresh. Featuring the voices of Paul Newman and Owen Wilson, "Cars" tells the tale of a hotshot race car who gets sidetracked in a small town, and learns a thing or two about friendship and humility in the process. The critics generally agree that while this may be the studio's weakest effort, it's still visually groundbreaking and emotionally heartfelt; it entertains even as it mourns the decline of the American small town. At 79 percent on the Tomatometer, "Cars" still provides a lot of kicks (on Route 66, no less!).

This is Paul Newman's audition reel for "The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift."

Speaking of multiple sixes, as we noted yesterday, "The Omen" has set the all-time record for box-office on a Tuesday (06-06-06!), so it's probably of little concern to many what the critics thought of it. Still, here goes: while the scribes note that this remake has its share of effectively spooky moments, it's bedeviled by its adherence to the 1976 original. The film stars Liev Schreiber and Julia Stiles as a diplomat and his wife who belatedly discover that they're raising El Diablo. Lucifer. The Prince of Darkness. You get the idea. At 30 percent on the Tomatometer, this little devil isn't scaring up many good reviews.

"Get behind me/ Get behind me Satan Yeah!"

Woe: Be gone! Critics say Robert Altman's "A Prairie Home Companion" retains the comfortable charms of its source, Garrison Keillor's radio show. And since it's a Robert Altman movie, it's got a gigantic cast, including Lindsay Lohan, Meryl Streep, Kevin Kline, and Tommy Lee Jones. And though it might fall short of Altman's finest work (dude has five movies at 100 percent on the Tomatometer), at 79 percent, this is one to write "Home" about. It's Certified Fresh, to boot.

"And now, for our next number, we'd like to do a version of Slayer's 'Raining Blood'..."

Also in theaters this week, albeit in limited release, are "The Heart of the Game," an in-depth documentary about seven years in the life of a high school girls' basketball program, that currently stands at 93 percent on the Tomatometer, and the cross-cultural music doc "Crossing the Bridge: The Sound of Istanbul," at 88 percent.

The Omen looks like a walking horror cliche. I can easily miss that.

A Prairie Home Companion, like most of Altman's films, just does a big ZERO for me. Won't see that.

Cars doesn't look at all appealing, and the trailers in combination with the film's reviews are seriously testing my resolve to see it(despite my feelings of goodwill for Pixar).

Someone will certainly have to DRAG me to a theater this weekend . . .

I haven't seen any monumentally awful films this summer(well, maybe X3) . . . but I'm still waiting for something to be surprisingly good. Pirates and Superman just can't get here soon enough!!!!!!

"Cars" and "Praire Home Companion" both look interesting to me, and alternately, I have no interest in "Pirates." "Superman," maybe. So looks like there's somethin' for the both of us this summer!

I can't wait to see Cars. Even though it doesn't seem to be quite as strong as Pixars other productions, there's nothing shabby about an 80% average on the tomato meter. I'm going to pre-order tickets for tomorrows 10PM showing ASAP.

Who cares if "Cars" or "A Prairie Home Companion" aren't getting the same criticial response as earlier work from the directors (John Lasseter and Robert Altman respectively). But these filmmakers are a force not to be fucked with. I might see "Cars" over the other movie. It's Owen "King Of The Stoner Comedians" Wilson over Lindsay "Publiicity Whore Who'd Sell Herself To Be On Every 'National Inquirer' and 'OK Magazine' than make a good movie" Lohan.

Oh yeah, and I've got to let everyone know about my beef with L.L. I'll list them:

1. All she's famous for is appearing on every damn tabloid paper I see in grocery stores, along with Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes. All you hear about is her boob job, her weight, her family problems, her partying, her car accidents, blah, blah, blah. And I think she wants to be on these covers. Can you say "media whore?"

2. Not everyone likes her. I go on IMDB message boards, and all I hear is negative things about her. Pretty much what I said above.

3. She must give Lorne Michaels a good blowjob, because she's hosted SNL 3 times, and not one nice thing has been said about them (I loved the Ann Margaret sketch on her most recent gig) Just because you starred in a good movie written by Tina Fey does not mean you're a comedienne. "Mean Girls" was good because of, in my opinion, Rachel McAdams. Is Lindsay Lohan that great a host that she's picked over better talent (Jennifer Aniston, Drew Barrymore, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Christopher Walken)

4. She's not that great an actress. Sure, she was good in two movies she did ("Freaky Friday" and "Mean Girls"), but they're just harmless tween movies. And now she's gonna be in some serious movies - the ensemble drama "Bobby" and the crime drama "Chapter 27." As far as I'm concerned, she's not really that deserving to star in these movies. I may not know art, but I prefer Amanda Bynes over Lohan - sure, she probably won't do drama any time in the future, but at least she is funny.

i enjoyed "Cars" 10 times better than "A Bug's Life"(although bug's life isn't TOO bad) but Bug's Life got 91% on the tomatometer. Go figure.

Cars is at 78% now on the meter. Although not as good of a % as other Pixar movies, that's still very good for any movie. I really enjoyed this movie. It never got boring, it was really funny. If you like Pixar, you will love this.
