"Hostel 2": The Girls' Turn
by Scott Weinberg | June 12, 2006
Discuss Article
While squeezing in a quick appearance at the MTV Movie Awards, professional horror geek Eli Roth spilled some enticing new beans regarding his "Hostel" sequel ... and let's just say the follow-up breaks out a whole gender-reversal approach.

From MTV: ""I'm writing 'Hostel 2' for girls — it's going to be three girls this time," he revealed. "They're studying in Italy for the summer, and they get lured, and they go back to ... well, we're going to go back to a lot of familiar places."

Through the existence of this Italian hostel, Roth plans to reveal that the Slovakian stopover from the first flick is actually part of a chain — kinda like a Motel 6, but with decapitations instead of a continental breakfast.

"It's all part of the organization; they've got the whole thing set up all over the place, and they have different scouts," Roth said. "We're going to learn a lot more about how it all works. In 'Hostel 2,' you're really going to see the ins and outs of the whole organization and how they get people and kill them.

"And there will be plenty of blood and torture," he added with a sadistic grin. "I can tell you that."

ugh, i'm one of the few that couldn't stand the first Hostel. I still don't get why it was so popular. i want to think this one will be better, but after reading what little plot he is giving away, it may be a rehash.
whatever he does, PLEASE don't waste the first half of the movie for setup. if you do, make the main characters LIKEABLE

I have to agree that I saw nothing special with the first Hostel, I kept waiting for the big gore scene that never really happened. I did enjoy the amount of boobies it had though and I think that is a trend that can continue

What a trash bag
The first movie was horrible. First half porn, second half cheesy, disgusting "horror." This is why Hollywood has a bad reputation. Because movies like this are being made and have SEQUELS!

i would say your the majority. Everyone that i asked said they hated this film, but i still saw it. IT SUCKED. Boring as hell, and even the torture sceens were not interesting or original. Thought saw was sooooooo much better, it didnt rely on just blood and gore.

Ummm...apparently I'm the minority here. I liked it a lot. It was not some kind of masterpiece, but it exceeded my expectations for the genre. It was stylish and relatively creative. If you guys weren't at least a little grossed out, then you may want to cut back on your Miike intake (his cameo was great). Am I sitting on pins and needles for the sequel? No, but I'll rent it for sure.

the most disturbing thing about this film was the kid gang who demanded "gum!" their 'stomping' scene was harrowing. no single-digit aged kid should being doing that!

it was mindless and fun (agree on the boob factor) and lighthearted and got dark real quick.
revenge in the bathroom.....gah!!

Hostel was a worthy entry into the American Gore movies of the past 2 years. It had the biggest eastern influence of the bunch, which it seems a majority didn't seem to get. Some of the people who haterized on it need to take in the Japanese influences to fully appreciate and get the angle that Roth was coming from. In the aspect of mixing the 2 cultures and creating something different, he did a servicable job and it was definately a step up from Cabin Fever.

I thought Hostel was boring and uneventful. It's plot was a meandering cliche . . . and I was left waiting for something surprising or horrific to happen . . . and nothing did!

Where did all the press about Hostel being some sadistic film come from anyway? It was positively mild by even moderate horror standards. And if it wasn't going to be indulgent in that way . . . couldn't it at least have had more than a threadbare plot? Or simply SOMETHING that could pass as character development?(and boobs don't count)

Although I loath the thought of a second one, doing Hostel "with girls" is a much more intriguing notion, and one we at least haven't seen as often. As bad as the first was . . . there's hope that a second will at least be a marginal improvement.

I guess I'm a minority in this as well. I actually enjoyed the slow burn of Hostel a la "Audition", but I already knew about it going in. I actually got into Jay Hernandez's character getting even at the movie's end. I have to agree the gore was over-hyped and not as nasty as I would have thought.

Let's hope number two will thrust us more into the action and satisfy the blood-hungry viewers.

Hostel rocks. And I think it's a horror flick that'll hold up ten years from now. Honest.

I watching Hostel on dvd. I actually watched the special features first, particularly the making of... It was clearly evident that the whole crew on Hostel were a bunch of stuck up idiots. There seemed a severe lack of professionalism on the set too. You get the feeling that they were out making a home video. The movie was absolutely sick. Eli Roth is an idiot. In toying with the idea that there may be people out there who enjoy torturing others, he thrusts such a movie in our faces, expecting us to enjoy it and be no different from those madmen in the movie. And they're giving this guy money to do another sequel?

I am a "Hostel" and Eli Roth haterizer, and I love Japanese horror.

That any American is making or profiting off of torture films post-Abu Gharib is appalling.

I enjoyed Hostel after seeing the crap that was the Ring, The Grudge and Dark Water. I hated all of those Japanese remakes that lost steam after the first half hour. At least Hostel had guts and gore to make up for a lack of high storytelling.

Hostel was a great dark comedy. Roth likes to make statements about the audience in a "Funny Games" sort of way, but much more light-hearted. It's great when such a self-parodying niche film can generate an audience and a sequel in America, even if most of them don't "get it".

A dark comedy it was, a forgetable popcorn thriller. For me, the only way they could get a sequal to work is to take the scouts and hunters point of view. ANyhow, the film surpasses the Saw franchise from every single angle.( except maybe in the box office haul)

You apparently didn't see the same features I did. Looked to me like it was a bunch of people having a good time making a movie that they all wanted to work on, which is the way it should be. I don't know about professionalism, but from my understanding the movie came in on time and on budget, so someone was being professional. And I'm not really sure how much I would enjoy watching people standing around and being "professional" on the behind the scenes of a popcorn horror movie. A serious drama, yes, but not something like Hostel.

It was Very Average at Best
The characters weren't particluarly interesting and while I think the idea was good one, it was executed poorly on most fronts. It also makes Europe look like a hell boring place, which it certainly isn't if you're travelling.

Cabin Fever was a much better effort.
