Kevin Smith Promises Walk-On Role In Exchange for "Clerks 2" Help
Web geek alert! Online frequenter and man-of-the-people Kevin Smith, AKA Silent Bob, is hosting a contest of sorts for his web-savvy fans, with a walk-on role in his next film going to the first-place winner.
In his online diary, Smith issued a missive last week to fans salivating for a role in the next View Askew production: get the "Clerks II" promotional banner up on as many web locations as you can by the day the pic is released, in exchange for some sweet View Askew prizes!

You too can help Jay and Silent Bob conquer the internet
The person who helps pimp "Clerks II" with the most unique locations in their online guerrila advertising campaign by midnight on July 21 will win a coveted walk-on role in Smith's as-yet-unannounced next film, which he notes will shoot in early 2007.
Runners up will also receive some cool swag, including a signed "Clerks II" script, a set of Jay and Silent Bob cast statuettes, Mooby's fast food props, and the T-shirt and Mooby's uniform off of Randal's back.

"When, Lord, when? WHENS GONNA BE MY TIME?"
Smith's suggestions for spreading the online "Clerks II" graffiti include getting the banner on "as many websites, messageboards, MySpace pages, and blogs as possible."
For more info (and the HTML code with the "Clerks II" banner), check out Smith's blog here.
"Clerks II" wriggles into theaters July 21 and stars Quick Stop returners Brian O'Halloran and Jeff Anderson, as well as Rosario Dawson, Jason Lee, Ben Affleck, Ethan Suplee, Wanda Sykes, Kevin Weisman, and of course, Kevin Smith and Jason Mewes.

on Jun 14 2006 07:43 PM as much as i love smith's movies, and i would love a walk-on role, this seems kinda dumb. anything that requires more than giving your name and info, i don't enter. i'm lazy. (Reply to this) |

on Jun 15 2006 09:14 AM Smith's particular talent is for making characters we shouldn't necessarily like enjoyable to watch (both in suffering through and then overcoming a host of mundande tribulations). He does this better than lots of other Hollywood writers. That said, it is entirely possible that he doesn't do it well enough for everybody to enjoy his movies. By way of comparison, I found "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" to be unpleasant because I couldn't get past not liking the lead characters, so for somebody else to not like Smith's movies due to their troupe of self-obsessed losers, pushers and skanks seems reasonable enough to me. on Jun 15 2006 10:12 AM In reply to this comment (#838114) No, I don't mean I can't stand his characters. His movies just aren't funny, they try to hard, also Ben Affleck. Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back wasn't "the mundane" at all, not when we have people falling off dams, mistaking monkeys as children, etc. That just strikes me as poor writing. And the rest of his films are the same. They just reek of poor writing. Now, the British 'The Office' is a good example of making the mundane funny. Rather than taking the "how zany can we get?" approach Smith and the American Office take, it actually puts subtlties into the jokes, or even just actions. Hell, I can't think of a single film Smith was involved in that I liked. Dogma was just boring and stupid, I felt like it was treating me like a toddler, explaining every single thing to me in the simplest terms possible. "You see, we're fallen angels. That means we're bad guys. We want to go into the church to get back to heaven. The church is where people pray. To God. And while I'm bad, I'll show my wings and kill these old folks in the board room to show I'm still an angel. See that? My wings have feathers. That's not normal. So you see, I'm a fallen angel. As is he." And then either Chris Rock or Jay or Silent Bob do something HI-LARIOUS, then we explain more. No, I can't stand Smith's movies because he writes the characters so well, I can't stand them because he's a poor writer. (Reply to this) |

on Jun 15 2006 11:21 AM I think only hardcore Kevin Smith fans will do this...I would do it, but, again, I am too lazy. And I love Kevin Smith's movies, because they are made for a couple kinds of nerds, movie nerds, comic book nerds, and Star Wars nerds to name a few. I am all a movie nerd and a Star Wars nerd, but...comic books aren't my thing. (Reply to this) |

on Jun 15 2006 12:12 PM Yea' I'm a movie/Star Wars nerd but comics never did anything for me, I'd rather just read a book (I guess you would say novel here) than a picture-book. I'm looking forward to Clerks 2 but I'm trying not to overhype it incase it sucks. But I mean c'mon, Rosario Dawson, that's all I need :) (Reply to this) |

on Jun 16 2006 07:21 AM In reply to this comment (#838117) I think Clerks was just unique enough to really impress a lot of people, and then leave others scratching their heads. Then came Mallrats and Chasing Amy, both of which I hated but others loved thoroughly. It really is a love/hate thing with Kevin Smith, there aren't many people on the fence about it. Personally I loved Dogma and will eat up anything with Jay & Silent Bob. Kevin Smith, the man, is hilarious, but some of his movies are just too over the top for my tastes. That said, I'm not the least surprised by the fanatical following people have for View Askew films, and I definitely expect a lot of people to take him up on this contest. (Reply to this) |
