First Negative "Superman Returns" Review -- Critical Kryptonite?
It had to happen eventually -- after a flurry of excited positive reviews following this month's sneak press screening of "Superman Returns," the first voice of dissent has emerged, courtesy of internet critic Dave Poland.
Poland, drinking the "Superman" hater-ade in his Movie City News column, "20 Weeks of Summer," was less than impressed by Bryan Singer's revival of the beloved Man of Steel. In his list of the worst movies so far of Summer 2006, "Superman Returns" ranks 5th (slightly better than "Mission: Impossible III," just a little worse than "X-Men: The Last Stand").
Some snippets of Poland's critique:
Dave Poland: Bryan Singer's own critical Lex Luthor?
Poland also takes some choice shots at fellow writer, The Hollywood Reporter's Anne Thompson:
After posting his review, Poland experienced such a backlash of criticism that he wrote a lengthy response in his "Hot Blog," wherein he defends himself and raises some interesting questions about the state of current entertainment media ("Is it only people who work for papers with a circulation over 500,000 that are entitled to their opinion?"). "Superman Returns" hits theaters June 28, and currently sits at a 92% Unofficial Tomatometer (with 13 sneak reviews).

Some snippets of Poland's critique:
"It's terribly cast, poorly conceived, extremely light on action, features a romance that is not remotely romantic, doesn't feature a single memorable, 'gosh, that was great' repeat-to-your-friends moment in a positive way (the blunder bits start early and often)..."
"The casting of Kate Bosworth is looking as faulty as the casting of Emmy Rossum and Jacinda Barrett in Poseidon. In fact, aside from Frank Langella, who gets nothing to do anyway, there is barely a single good casting decision."
"It's not a hideous piece of crap. It really is about a step behind X-Men: The Last Stand, equally poorly directed, equally missing complexity, equally not up to the standards of the first two films, but with less interesting characters and absolutely zero sense of humor about itself."

Poland also takes some choice shots at fellow writer, The Hollywood Reporter's Anne Thompson:
"In this case, it will be interesting to see whether what I am calling 'The Anne Thompson Rule' is in effect. What that means is that Anne often shoots from the organ just below the hip when it comes to movies that may have a strong female appeal and, truth be told, I am always looking over one shoulder when she gets on that tear."Critical pan aside, Poland agrees that "Superman Returns" will make mucho bucks at the box office, although he predicts it "will be crushed by Pirates of The Caribbean II and played out completely before August 1."

on Jun 18 2006 01:50 PM No surprise really All I can say is that the man is entitled to his opinion. He didn't like it. Not every movie is going to be liked by everybody. Life will go on. (Reply to this) |

on Jun 18 2006 02:41 PM uh yeah, and pretty much every movie on Rotten Tomatoes has a bad review, if not 30 of them, haha. can we really be surprised by negative reviews? is this worthy of it's own news thread? i'm telling you, if you go into Superman Returns without the "omg it will be the best movie no matter what" sort of hype, i bet many will be bored out of thier minds during this movie. i hope i am wrong. ![]() on Jun 18 2006 02:41 PM the fact that he has M:I 3 in his worst movies of summer says alot. and to a lesser extent X3. I can give him his opinion, but of what I just read, he is an idiot. (Reply to this) |

on Jun 18 2006 03:03 PM The only reason this bad review is at all remarkable is because the rest of the reviews thus far have been overwhelmingly positive. I did take a look at some of Poland's previous reviews. I was a bit disturbed to see a negative review for Sin City and a positive review for the Texas Chainsaw Massacre. And he did give X3 a favorable rating, in spite of him razzing it in his SR review, which pnly adds to my confusion. (Reply to this) |
![]() on Jun 18 2006 03:17 PM Well I thought Poseidon was a pointless, stupid, piece of complete crap. So If he thinks it's the best movie of the summer (in the full review it's stated) then I don't care what this guy says. Just like the other reviews (good or bad), this review is really vague and almost seems it could have been written without seeing it. It seems like it's a review on the previews and hype surrounding the film more than an actual review on the movie. I don't think any of the reviews out are going to be actually used in the tomatometer because they call them sneak reviews or something like that. (Reply to this) |

on Jun 18 2006 03:46 PM The movie couldn't have been that bad if everyone else says it's good. I liked MI3 and X3. They should let these movies be reviewed from a teen's perspective rather than old grisly men who try to gain publicity by being the odd one out. (Reply to this) |

![]() on Jun 18 2006 05:08 PM Does he work for Disney by any chance?? Seriously, I don't care about these early reviews. Sure everybody's entitled to their own opinion, but it doesn't mean that I have (or everyone else has) to listen to them. I'll still be there in line on June 28. (Reply to this) |

![]() on Jun 18 2006 05:21 PM In reply to this comment (#838290) Dave Poland's pretty well respected in the industry, and he has definitely seen the movie. I think Poseidon is on his worst of the summer list (not best of). I think from reading some of the reviews, the consensus seems to be that it's a decent movie -just don't go in expecting it to the best comic book movie ever. None of these reviews will be counted towards the Tomatometer because they're all 'sneak reviews.' When the film opens, official reviews from critics who are on the Tomatometer list will count; and Dave Poland's on that list. Just take this as one guy's opinion. He has seen the movie. None of us has. Who knows, maybe after we see the movie, some of us might agree with him. (Reply to this) |

on Jun 18 2006 06:51 PM In reply to this comment (#838296) While he may be respected, I believe his use of extremely negative adjectives and descriptions to get his point across is reason to throw a red flag at this guy. While he may not like the movie, the way he's explaining it can only mean he really wants to bash it. I believe he had his mind set before seeing it. Only time will tell, but I feel there will be at least some positive things about this movie when we see it. Hey, 98 percent with this guy's review at the end of the day sounds good to me!!! ![]() on Jun 18 2006 07:43 PM I would like to point out that David Poland's fellow net critic Jeffery Wells gave Supes a very postitive review. Also not everybody is going to like the film. (Reply to this) |

on Jun 18 2006 07:46 PM I don't know, I've seen some movies that were so bad that I felt cheated out of 2 hours and felt mad at the director for being so incompetent at his profession. Until we've seen the movie, none of us has any right to comment on on whether this guy is right or wrong. (Reply to this) |

on Jun 18 2006 08:02 PM Haha This guy gave Hulk and 2 Fast 2 Furious a positive review but gave Kill Bill and Sin City a negative one, he may be right about Superman, but based on his past movie taste, he's probably not. (Reply to this) |
![]() on Jun 18 2006 08:32 PM He is a really bad critic... That's all I can say... Nobody listen to Poland. He's probably looking for attention or just trying to start some controversy. If you want evidence, look at his previous reviews... Complete idiocy. (Reply to this) |
