Viking Epic Gets Banished to January

Marcus Nispel's "Pathfinder" was just bumped back from September 8th to January 12th, the move most likely prompted by the waves of muffled giggles that greeted the flick's theatrical trailer.

The epic adventure film comes from the "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" director (not Tobe Hooper), and it stars Karl Urban and Clancy Brown. Honestly I was kind of looking forward to the movie, but then again I liked "The 13th Warrior," so don't go by me.

In related news, IGN FilmForce recently had a sit-in with Nispel and Brown, and here's an excerpt of their coverage: "Nispel explained how, as an Eastern European, he was taught growing up that Vikings had reached America long before Christopher Columbus did. He wanted to portray Viking culture differently and more accurately than other films have, emphasizing how terrifying they were.

Brown, a veteran of many genre films, revealed that he plays Gunnar, an old Viking chieftain whose best battles are behind him. The actor had to learn Icelandic for the role, and also recounted how the film's star, Karl Urban, managed to get him to reluctantly perform some stunts for a fight scene."

"accurately"? Please, vikings didnt' even have horns on their helmets, let alone half the equipment that they're wearing in that trailer.

Why, were you there? Sometimes you have to stray from, or embellish history a bit to get people to bite; a little visual segway from the myths and legends of the past with which people are familiar, to a more or less accurate historical rendition of actual events.

Then there's you. You seem to have no trouble 'biting'.

Actually there have been archeological finds that show evidence that horned helmets were worn by Europeans cultures. However most believe that the horned helmets were used for ceremonies and not during battles. Although I've read one account were a tapesty dipicting a viking raid on a monestary had several of the raiders wearing horned helmets. When you're attacking a bunch of monks, you might find yourself wearing some crazy headpiece to scare the crap out of them.

I agree that the trailer has a little bit of a Heavy Metal/Warhammer feel to it but I've always thought of the vikings as traders, plunders, and hoarders. It's a fact that they traded with people as far as Istanbul and people in the Middle East. I assume that they could pick up armor carried over from ancient times, whether Roman designed, German designed, Gallic design, or Persian. I also imagine that if you wanted something made from a master armorer or blacksmith you could probably find one to do the job. Look at all the warrior castes from the ancient times and there have been many different types of headgear.

The many horned helmets found in Europe belong mostly to the Germans from Denmark. Two Bronze Age horned helmets unearthed at Viks�, Denmark sporting long twisting horns made of metal and a horned helmet has been dredged from the Thames believe to be of celtic origin.

Just a thought.
