Trailer Bulletin: DiCaprio, Damon, Nicholson in Scorsese's "Departed"
by Scott Weinberg | July 31, 2006
Discuss Article
Any new movie from Martin Scorsese is something to look forward to, but considering the cast and the source material the filmmaker's working with this time out, "The Departed" looks like it could be something extra special. Check out the all-new trailer...

Trailer's available right here at Yahoo! Movies.

Synopsis: "Young undercover cop Billy Costigan (Leonardo DiCaprio) is assigned to infiltrate the mob syndicate run by gangland chief Costello (Jack Nicholson). While Billy is quickly gaining Costello's confidence, Colin Sullivan (Matt Damon), a hardened young criminal who has infiltrated the police department as an informer for the syndicate, is rising to a position of power in the Special Investigation Unit. Each man becomes deeply consumed by his double life, gathering information about the plans and counter-plans of the operations he has penetrated. But when it becomes clear to both the gangsters and the police that there's a mole in their midst, Billy and Colin are suddenly in danger of being caught and exposed to the enemy -- and each must race to uncover the identity of the other man in time to save himself."

Also part of the stellar cast are Martin Sheen, Mark Wahlberg, Alec Baldwin, Ray Winstone, Anthony Anderson, and Vera Farmiga.

"The Departed," which is based on the first "Infernal Affairs" flick, opens on October 6th.

I know people are dogging on this trailer but to me it's like this the purpose of a trailer is to sell tickets. There's no way in my mind that if you care about cinema in general and gangster films in particular this trailer wouldn't have sold you a ticket. The dissapointment comes from people who had already decided months in advance that they were looking forward to The Departed and weren't thoroughly entertained by the trailer. If you knew nothing about this film before you saw the trailer I don't see how it couldn't have made you intrested given the people involved and the plot premise.

I'm with you, the trailer sucks. It gave the film a B movie vibe. Why couldn't they just have shown the stars in quick shots and the title?

infernal affairs is a great movie, if scorsese manages to capture the emotion of the story this one could be a classic

This DVD cover for Infernal Affairs is lame and disrespectful. The girl on the cover has nothing to do with the movie. Way to show your respect for another country's classic, Miramax. Genius work, marketing guys.

Bad Track Choice
The movie looks good, but I'm sorry that trailer was killed by the overlaying of "Comfortably Numb". The pace of the song in relation to the pace of the trailer was just way off.

the trailer sucks but...
This is the man who brought us "Goodfellas", for crying out loud. Between the director, the cast and the premise i'm still excited as hell.
