Trailer Bulletin: Clint Eastwood's Iwo Jima Epics
by Scott Weinberg | August 16, 2006
Discuss Article
It's been well-reported that Clint Eastwood has a pair of WWII movies on the way. The first will be "Flags of Our Fathers" and the second will be "Red Sun, Black Sand." And now you can check out a "combo trailer" for both films...

Thanks to ComingSoon.net for the report: "Flags of Our Fathers" chronicles the battle of Iwo Jima and the fates of the flag raisers and some of their brothers in Easy Company. Ryan Phillippe, Jesse Bradford, Adam Beach, Paul Walker, Jamie Bell, Barry Pepper and John Benjamin Hickey star.

"Red Sun, Black Sand" (aka "Letters From Iwo Jima" in Japan) revolves around the real-life Japanese General Tadamichi Kuribayashi, played by Ken Watanabe, who battled American troops for 40 days on the small island of Iwo Jima.

"Flags" will be released on October 20 in North America."

Click here for the (pretty darn impressive) promo clip.

It looks like this was a trailer that might have been shown in a Japanese movie theater. The writiing basically explains the premise of the movie, and in a couple of places it talks about Academy Award winner Clint Eastwood and nominee Ken Watanabe. At another point, it points out the two protagonists, Japan and America, in one of the most devastating battles of all time. Alot of it is your standard movie cliche, heart wrenching, drama intensifying studio pablum, but there you have it.

Pablum's the perfect word. Pablum/Propaganda.

That famous flag raising was staged, btw.

You're completely wrong, and the book is called Flags of Our Fathers but it's one of the most accurate and well researched books on war that I've ever read. It's not propaganda at all if it is true. It's going to be a fantastic film.

EASTWOOD RULES
I can't wait for these movies. I love Eastwood behind the camera. After Unforgiven, Mystic River, and Million Dollar Baby, you can't go wrong with this. I only worry about Paul Walker. He is so bad. When will Hollywood realize this?

the book is amazing and i encourage you all to give it a shot- I've been waiting for this movie for a long time- the photo was set-up, in fact. but that never took any validity away from the event. those japanese soldiers would rather kill themselves than be killed, as you will see in the film.- hell, johnny cash even has a song about one of the flag raisers "ballad of ira hayes" - clint cant go wrong

So I just got done having to deal with a bunch of crackpot assholes on the WTC page who would rather cry conspiracy than talk about the movie and now I have to deal with it here?! God you people need an outlet for your screwed up mind set. Go join a debate team or something and stop shitting all over these movies that are only intended to honor and remember historical events. An Oliver Stone movie is one thing, but I'm not gonna let you bastards ruin a Clint Eastwood movie with a bunch of your wild nutjob theories. Get out of mommy's basement, pull off the tinfoil hats and get a damn life! Put all that conspiracy theory energy into something constructive.

Actually you are wrong,it wasnt staged, the photographer just got lucky with the shot...Heres a little history lesson, the first flag was raised on the mountain but was too small to see, to the general in charge sent another platoon up with a much larger flag to replace the smaller one. The flag raisers used a piece of piping they found and raised it, the photographer wasnt looking at the time they started raising it and just happend to turn as they were in the middle of it and snap the picture...The picrure of the first flag raising was the one that was staged and posed for, the second flag raising pic was just pure blind luck...

I can hardly wait for both of these films. Amongst all the talking about Flags of Our Fathers, I never heard anyone mention who was cast in Red Sun, Black Sand but I was hoping that Watanabe would get the lead, and hell yes he's starring in it, so I am very happy with this news.

No, you insinuating that the film is a bunch of flag-waving propaganda is waht I have a problem with. It's the same thing as some idiot questioning 9/11 just cuz they are pissed off at our government or the current administration. Your lame-ass Fox News comment at the end of your post pretty much reinforces my point. I never said I was a flag-waving, Bush-loving, republican. I just said I'm sick and tired of movies like this coming out, only to have some asshole try to shit all over them with their stupid political hang-ups. Get it?!

Ever since Raging Bull lost to Ordinary People, Martin Scorsese seems to be cursed. His last movie, The Aviator, looked like a sure bet to win until Clint Eastwood brought out Million Dollar Baby. Now this year, his movie The Departed will have to go up against not one, but two likely best picture nominations from Eastwood. Talk about poor timing! Regardless of what else comes this year, the Academy Awards will be interesting.

Not Paul Walker
BTW. No need to worry about Paul Walker. He is not in this (at least not "Flags") It is an actor named Benjamin Walker (no relation). And, in Paul's defense (though I'm no fan), he showed some range, or at least a very different side of himself, in the little seen "Running Scared." Definitly better than what most would expect from the evidence submitted by "Fast and the Furious," "Into the Blue" and the like.
