Paramount & Tom Cruise Decide to See Other People
by Scott Weinberg | August 23, 2006
Blog Article | Discuss Article
Paramount decided not to extend its contract with Tom Cruise's production company, thereby sparking a whole lot of Hollywood water cooler gossip about who said nasty things and why. It's pretty fun stuff, too.

From Variety: "The 14-year Tom Cruise-Paramount relationship has ended on a note of anger and outrage. (Cruise's production partner Paula) Wagner denounced comments made by Sumner Redstone about Cruise as "outrageous and disrespectful." Redstone told the Wall Street Journal on Tuesday that Par was ending its relationship with Cruise because "his recent conduct has not been acceptable."

Cruise has been a tabloid regular over the past year due to his relationship with actress Katie Holmes, their daughter, his outspoken views on psychiatry and medication, and his increasingly outspoken advocacy for the Church of Scientology.

Wagner defended Cruise/Wagner's longtime success for the studio, saying that the shingle's product has accounted for 15% of Par's theatrical revenue in the last 10 years and 32% for the past six years. Their credits include the "Mission: Impossible" franchise, "Vanilla Sky" and "War of the Worlds."

---

What I find amusing is that Redstone said "We don't want to work with the guy anymore cuz he's been acting like a nutcase," and Wagner's response is "But look at how much money we made for you!"

tom cruise is done for - MI3 didn't make THAT much money esp for a franchise film with cruise in it. This can show that he is no longer the hollywood draw he used to be. Plus add in the fact that he really is a nutcase now. And what do you get - his next film would cost at least $100 million+ and it would probably bomb. Paramount is actually thinking now.

P.S. The fact that tom tried to have the south park episode "trapped in the closet" pulled (you know so he can promote MI3 which actually had too much publicity) probably didn't sit well with Paramount.

At least Tom is standing up for what he believes in. Unlike the rest of the world, he is not afraid of being criticized for speaking his mind. Tom is better off without Paramount if they are too cowardous to stick beside him while he simply attempts to question the norms of our society. Although M:I:III may not have been as prosperous as his other, more recent, collaberations with the studio, it was one of his best quality films to date. Believe me, he still has alot more fans than you think!

However screwed up he actually is, I still think he's a great actor. He was excellent in Vanilla Sky (one of my favorite movies) and Magnolia. M-I III was the best action film of the summer. I'll be intrigued by anything he is in just because he chooses quality pictures. He still has a fan in me, even though I disagree with his lifestyle and beliefs.

Cruise is the man, and anybody who doesn't like the man is too hopped up on Zoloft to enjoy fine cinema.

What is This!!
Yeah, Tom Cruise is a little strange, even eccentric. He is too in love with a girl half his is age, but it's Katie Holmes, I'd be jumping up and down on Oprah's couch for her. I dont subscribe to scientology, but a man's religious beliefs are his own. Cruise's only fault is he is too obsessed with it and spends too much time promoting it, like every other born-agian celebrity. Last time I checked, these actions don't amount to criminal behavior. The guy is a great actor, just see "Magnolia" or "Born on the Fourth of July". A studio should not give up on an actor just for this. But then again, the best thing Cruise did with Paramount was The Mission Impossible movies anyway, so maybe this could be a good thing for his career.

Xenu will not be pleased by this news. If Cruise purges just a few more thetans out of his body I think his career could rebound.

Cruise is a wonderful person. Look what he achieved, not only his movie past. He talked with presidents about a learning system, he helped to the 9/11 firemans to recover from the shock. He does what he believes in - and some people hates him for that, I'm so sorry for them. And he made good movies and he still a BO draw. Just look at the stats. Mi3 stands at the 4th biggest international success of the year, although its domestic total is a disappointment, but that's a fault of the release time, because Mi3 is a summer movie and early May wasn't a good choice. The movie will gross more WW then Superman Returns!!! Surprised, ha? How many actors 'd like to have a 400m grossing movie? So I don't think that Cruise is unhappy. He's got an own studio, we'll see in what movie stars next time.

I think Paramount just wanted to see photos of Suri and they were mad they couldn't.

Jokes aside, this is exhibit A demonstrating the power of a good publicist. Notice how Cruise immmmmmmmmediately had these personal life issues come up in the media once he fired his top-grade publicist and hired his sister?
