Tyrese Gibson as "Luke Cage"?
by Scott Weinberg | August 29, 2006
Discuss Article
Marvel's got a "Luke Cage" movie sitting somewhere on the back burners, and filmmaker John Singleton is apparently involved in some capacity. And now we have the very first piece of casting gossip. I ask you comic fans: Would Tyrese Gibson make for a solid Cage?

From IGN FilmForce: " A film adaptation of the Luke Cage comic, which has gained considerable attention recently in the Marvel universe, is still on, and according to actor Tyrese Gibson, he is still the frontrunner to play the man once known as Power Man.

We caught up with Gibson on the set of "Transformers" this weekend, and this is what he had to say about his role in the project: "Right now they're doing a rewrite on the film. John Singleton's got me at the top of his list. I'm not full-on committed to the project but it's something I'm extremely interested in. Met up with Neal Moritz a few times about it. Met up with Avi Arad a few times about it, and you know, we'll see what happens."

Lacks the necessary 'bulk'
As was the case with Thomas Jane (a fine actor) being cast as The Punisher (a role tailor-made for Duane "The Rock" Johnson), I don't think that Tyrese Gibson has the physical presence required to play Luke Cage in accordance with the character's traditonal portrayal in the original (comic book) source material. Granted, Gibson at 6'1" is bigger than Jane (who I feel was totally miscast in the role of what should have been a 6'6" Frank Castle), so the size discrepancy between actor and character will be less apparent. I do admit, though, that after racking my brain, I can't come up with a better alternative than Gibson (the usual suspects are either too old or simply not right for the part: Snipes, Duncan, Rhames)...so maybe Tyrese is the right man for the job, eh? Anyone have any solid casting alternatives?

Here's what I don't understand - who are they trying to attract with the Luke Cage name? Grown-up ex-fanboys like myself? We are past it. Everyone else is not going to be familiar with the name. Maybe they hope to attract people with the "MARVEL" moniker alone.

I also agree that Tyrese lacks the physical presence.

People put WAY too much stock in the physicality of the actor, and not enough in the acting. If the Punisher had been a better movie, Jane would've been just fine.

Terry Crews would be tight.

Maybe they could get "Zeus" from "No Holds Barred" to play Cage.

No one will see this. Taran72 is on the money- there are 25 movies that should come out before this one if you are targeting nostalgic 25-40 year-olds. If you are going for the younger crowd, pick a character someone's heard of please.

Lacks the necessary 'acting skills'
Then again, this movie is called "Luke Cage." Perhaps acting is not a prerequisite.

Maybe Mr. T could get back into shape for the role.

Yet another role that could have gone to one of hundreds of talented black actors, but instead they just went for another singer, who happens to be a terrible at both also (Just see "Baby Boy")

Why, period?
I think they're calling it Luke Cage because Power Man sounds like a Tim Allen movie. My question is why make this film at all. They're wasting time and resources on something that could have been used to creat Black Panther or something cooler. I don't think Tyreses acting is a problem, and he is actually a tad better actor than what a comic movie requires (or usually has). And he's bigger than what people think. Tyrese has gotten bulkier, he's not a model lean any more. He's kinda chunky buff. At any rate, Luke Cage sounds generic and unfamiliar. And of course it will flop because of obvious reasons. Like all three blades having rotten ratings here but every time a film was released the theatre was packed.

Haters.

Who is asking for a Luke Cage movie?

Why make one?

Why does Marvel deem it nessesary to make a movie about every character in their universe. Why not make a movie about Paste Pot Pete while we're at it.

I'll tell you who asked for a Luke Cage movie: the bottom line did. Marvel Studios would be smart to make this cheaply enough to realistically fill their return coffers without having to rely on Spider-Man-like numbers. This also explains the existence of flicks like Ghost Rider, Black Widow, Wolverine, Blade, and other B-listers. It's just good business sense. Studios cannot survive on tentpoles alone, people.

Besides, Nick Cage, who named himself after Power Man, would be a guaranteed ticket holder. :D

Power Man & Iron Fist. Seems better for the action, and demographics.

Personally I think I have found the perfect person for Luke Cage. And it is not tyrese. It is my dad. He is an actor but hasnt had a breakout role. His physical build is all natural no steriods. If you don't believe me check him out. and leave a comment. I'm really trying to get him noticed.

Alright here is the real. I grew up with Powerman. We need someone with a little more edge than Tyrese. He is strong but I still remeber him singin on the bus "Coca Cola" & other love songs. Anyhow I know this is a stretch but Sony should consider 50 Cent as a stretch possibility for Luke Cage & here is the way out 1...Kimbo Slice!! Slice is the modern Mr T. Lets do it Sony/Marvel. I want in. I want a cameo. Get at me. ...Billi
