Peter Jackson Discussing "The Hobbit"!!

And by "discussing" I mean "talking to AICN's Quint about the possibility of MGM mounting a pair of Hobbit films," as was mentioned in an article earlier this week. Again: There is nothing to indicate that Peter Jackson is (or will be) connected to a "Hobbit" movie; only that MGM has announced some tentative plans ... and that Pete shared a conversation about those plans.

From AICN: "QUINT: I saw in Variety that THE HOBBIT came up. The MGM thing. Did you see this?

PETER JACKSON: Where the guy who runs MGM was announcing their tentpoles and saying they were doing TERMINATOR 4 and they want me to make 2 HOBBIT films? I was reading that this morning on the net. It's a rather strange thing to wake to. I'm up for it, but somebody should phone me because I'm getting a bit booked out at the moment!

Everybody asks me about THE HOBBIT, you know? But the reality is I've never had a conversation with anybody about it. Not one person has ever made a phone call to me. I don't know. The irony is that we're acquiring our own projects now and we're buying the rights to books. The reality is, to be quite honest with you, we're getting ourselves now nice and busy, in a good way, for the next 4 years. So, people have not (spoken to us) about THE HOBBIT and it's making it more and more impossible for us to be involved."

As much of a guarantee a Jackson-directed Hobbit would be great, I'm glad he' not directing. Jackson needs to work on more varied films, I don't think we've seen the best of Peter Jackson yet, and we never will if he continues to just do Middle-Earth epics

What's your beef with the LOTR Triliolgies? What have you done in the business?

Uhm, The Hobbit is most likely the last Middle-Earth epic we'll ever see. If we get to see it at all, that is.

Jackson's a pretty wise fellow. That interview is interesting because it puts some "form" behind the various news bulletins we've been hearing out of the Jackson camp.

It is strange that he hasn't been contacted yet for The Hobbit. I always felt the slightly episodic nature of the book would be better lent to a miniseries than to a film. But with two pictures . . . maybe it can work.

King Kong was a misfire on many levels . . . most involving the script, casting and effects overkill. I hope Peter can get back on his feet with some new projects. The Lovely Bones is definately a head-scratcher . . . hard enough to make work as a novel, much less a film.

Jackson needs to leave the Hobbits behind, glad to see he isn't directing this one.

I think it would be great to have Jackson direct the Hobbit, but now that I think about it, I guess it's not required. The Hobbit isn't an epic quite like LOTR, and provided they can film the same visual style (same Hobbiton, Rivendell, same Middle Earth, etc.) and of course snag Ian Holm and Ian McKellen, then it would be awesome. I just hope they don't decide to use somebody other than Ian Holm, despite that Bilbo would be much younger I don't know how I'd feel about another actor portraying him.

Jackson should stay far far away. There are too many high quality films coming out of Hollywood. It's boring. Tim Story or Michael Bay would be excellent for this. Yes! Great popcorn entertainment instead of dull oscar winning tedium. America demands another videogame movie.

Peter Jackson's the only person who can do justice to the Hobbit. It seems that MGM's motivation for launching this campaign was exclusively for MONEY and hype, not out of pious love for Tolkien's works. PLEEAASSEEE don't turn LOTR into the STAR WARS prequels!

give it up jackson, please, give it up. LOTR was lucky it was the first of its kind, because it was horriblly overrated. King Kong was a disaster, go focus on producing Halo... no hobbit story, for god sakes.

yes yes, screw the hobbit (although its probably my favorite J.R.R Tolkein book, lol, go figure)...i'd rather see an amazing Halo film than another middle earth flick...been there, done that.

Lite version of a piece of crap??? bite your tounge. The LOTR trillogy are 3 of the greatest movies of all time. And Kong was amazing too. Not in the top movies of all time, but it's still a fantastic movie.

On another note, wouldnt mind seeing a hobit movie. Was expecting it to be honest.

I wouldn't mind a Hobbit movie either, but I don't think Peter Jackson necessarily needs to direct it if the other people who were involved in making LOTR (writers, WETA, artists, actors, etc.) were on board. That being said, I would love if Jackson directed it.

It's been a couple of years since I've read the Hobbit, but where exactly would they cut off the first film if they were to make 2? I know the book is like a series of small adventures so it would seem somewhat possible to cut some parts out to make 1 movie (but then less profits I guess).

I find it interesting that fans of Tolkien's works are saying things like "screw the Hobbit" and "have Michael Bay direct it!". You do realize that there really is only 1 chance to get this movie right? I don't want to see a director who is looking for the hype and the money and has no love for the story. We know Jackson has a love for the story, and clout with the actors who should helm it. I would also like to see Jackson's rendition of middle earth kept for the hobbit, instead of being changed to the tastes of the new director.

Also, I'd like you to remember the Dungeons and Dragons movies. Two directors, two visions of a fantasy world. One enjoyable, one horribly, horribly bad. We know Jackson's vision of Middle Earth is beautiful to see, and the characters are beautifully done. So why take the chance of the Hobbit movie being crap with a new director?

I don't think they will do the Hobbit without Peter Jackson unless they are desperate (as in Peter will totally ever refuse to direct it because he doesnt want to or he doesnt want to split it into 2 movies (which he probably wont). And they must get Ian McKellan and Andy Serkus for the Hobbit.

I registered just to reply to the Michael Bay comment....

You are high! I bet you cried watching Armageddon.

LOTR was only so amazing (and not butchered) because of the leadership/drive/passion of Peter Jackson.

A part of me thinks that it would be a choice decision for peter to start the preparation in making this film right away and get it out as soon as possible since i loved the other LOTR movies so much but the other part of me....Well to be completly honest i think it would be even cooler if this was something he returned to further down the line of his career just when we didnt expect it. Jackson has poured so much enegry and sweat into these stories after doing three epic films that ,in reality, i think it would be best if he moved onto other things atleast for the moment. One thing i do know is that if this is something the studios push out into production as soon as possible hoping audiences are still hungry for more hobbit action with MICHAEL (lets make another crappy movie for the hell of it)BAY as the director I will be pissed PISSED. Isnt bay doing transformers i hope he doesnt fuck that up

I liked the lotd franchise.
It would give me something to do for three hours that one day every year.
The movie always came out the exact day that I have nothing to do.

I've been waiting for another movie like that.
Something long and fun to watch.

Chronicals of Narnia different fill anything in at all.
Hopefully Mr. Peter Peter would come inside this movie and make it fun looking.

Someone like Michael Bay would throw in all this useless shit. And maybe Josh Hartnett. I don't know.

Okay - everyone's gotta settle down just a bit. First off - back off the LOTR trilogy. That will go down in history as one of the best trilogies to ever grace the screen. Most of that is due to the tenacity and drive that Jackson put into these stories. It would be an asbolute tragedy if Jackson didn't do this film(s). It would turn into a complete mess.

1. Everyone in the films loved Jackson - I could honestly see Sir Ian McKellan putting up a huge fight to come back if Jackson is not helming this film. Not to mention anybody else originally involved with these projects.

2. WETA - will they still do the film if Jackson doesn't direct? They very well might. They very well might not. Would they venture back into this world without Jackson at the forefront?

3. New Zealand - an amazing country I got to visit recently has extremely touchy feelings about anything being moved for filming purposes - the "it has to be returned to the exact way it was before filming" - they stretched this law even further with Jackson. Jackson knew what they expected of him and allowed him to bend the rules further than anyone else. Any other director would not recieve the leniency that Jackson did - and beyond that, with MGM's involvement and Jackson's absence to calm the storm - there could be a lot of trouble.

4. Everyone involved already knows exactly what they want and how they filmed the previous films - Jackson and crew already have a good idea about how they would move forward with the Hobbit in his native of land. Many others would start back at square one perhaps without the actors, the producers, WETA and the common knowledge of filming on this epic scale in NZ - something that would send this movie into production hell.

LOTR trilogy was an amazing epic event that will be remembered as one of the greats. If Jackson doesn't finish the full spectrum of the story - it should be left untouched until he has the time to do it. I can already hear the "biggest flop in history" because the wrong man wasn't behind the production.

I definately think Jackson should move forward with a few of his projects before returning back to the Hobbit - but in the end, its something that needs to happen. MGM would be making a grand mistake if they are thinking otherwise.
